- For the long green variety of onion, see Green onion.
Shallots are a very small sweet onion like bulb that forms in clusters like garlic. Shallots have a papery skin that must be removed before they can be used. They grow in clusters, similar to garlic. The taste is similar to a standard onion, but more delicate almost a blend of onion/garlic flavor. Whole immature shallots are sometimes used like spring onions. Shallot tops are eaten much like chives, and can be dried and saved for seasoning later.
