Diagram showing how to estimate the height of an object. Hold a ruler so that its "zero" mark is in the line of sight (A) of the base of the object to be measured. Move the ruler towards or away from your eye until line B crosses the "1" mark on the ruler and lines up with a known height on the object. Without moving the ruler, glance up and note the measurement where the line of sight (C) to the top of the object crosses the ruler. Multiply this measurement by the known height to get the height of the object.
