Diagram showing how to estimate the width of a stream. Choose a marker on the opposite side of the stream (A). Place a marker (B) directly across the stream from marker A, and then place two additional markers (C & D) at equal intervals, such that the line from B-C is the same length as the line from C-D. Walk a line 90° from the line formed by B-D until markers A and C line up. Place a final marker (E) at this point. The distance across the stream (A-B) will be equal to the distance between markers D-E. This is essentially the procedure described by the Roman agrimensor Marcus Junius NIPSUS
