Summary

Description
English: In isolation, atoms have spherical charge distributions with no dipole moment (top). Applied electric fields () push electron density in the direction of the field, creating a depletion of charge on one side of the atom ()and an increase in charge on the other side (). This creates an induced dipole moment.

This chemistry image could be re-created using vector graphics as an SVG file. This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with {{vector version available|new image name}}.

It is recommended to name the SVG file “Polarization of an atom induced by an electric field.svg”—then the template Vector version available (or Vva) does not need the new image name parameter.
