English: STS-44 Atlantis, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 104, soars into the evening darkness after liftoff from Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Launch Complex (LC) Pad at 6:44 pm (Eastern Standard Time (EST)). This low angle view captures OV-104 atop the external tank (ET) with an exhaust plume billowing from the left solid rocket boosters (SRB) skirt. The glow created by the SRB firing highlights the aft ET and the aft tank-orbiter attachments. Darkness accentuates the diamond shock effect produced by OV-104's three space shuttle main engines (SSMEs).
