BLENDER NOVICE PAGE: First Grasp The Concept
Blender has multiple modes. To edit an object you must select it and put it into edit mode. This is done either by pressing the TAB key or by going to the bottom of the 3D view panel and clicking on the pull down menu with the text "Object Mode".
In edit mode you may select any face, vertex (a point at a corner usually. This is only a rough definition) or an edge (the line between to vertexes). You select these with RIGHT-CLICK and scale, move and rotate like an object in object mode.

BLENDER NOVICE PAGE: Next Learn How To Edit
When you want to create an object in a certain shape you must first think of what object will be the easiest to model to make your dream object. The cube is usually the best for this job but this is not always the case.
You can experiment by adding objects and then modelling them in to something else. With this you can learn the abilities.
BLENDER NOVICE PAGE: Note
You may subdivide (make 1 face or edge into multiple faces or edges) a face or edge by selecting it and clicking the "Subdivide" button in the menu to the left of the 3D view.
Tips And Tricks
Try and keep your models LOW-POLY. This means try to have as few faces per object as possible. Don't let this constrict your modelling though. Just when one face could do instead of four try to reduce it. High-poly models can slow the game down.
Tips And Tricks
When extruding in edit mode it is best to set an axis.
Tips And Tricks
Do you want to move a face on two axis' at a time instead of one? Press SHIFT-Z to move on X and Y, SHIFT-X to move on Y and Z and SHIFT-Y to move on Z and X.
Tips And Tricks
NEVER press P in Editmode. It won't start the game engine but instead separate the current face, vertex or edge. If you do want it to separate go ahead.
