MINOR:

Morning sickness occurs in 2/3; usually resolves spontaneously by 12 weeks

Heartburn often relieved by MOM (do not use bicarb)

Shortness of breath

Constipation often relieved by MOM

Hemorrhoids

Pelvic “fullness”

Backache

Varicose Veins

Edema

Gestation diabetes

Urinary frequency and urgency

MAJOR: Pre-eclampsia

Symptoms: [often of sudden onset]

loss of appetite

vomiting

headache

malaise “feeling sick”

epigastric pain

visual disturbances [dimness, spots, blurring]

jaundice

cyanosis

dyspnea

Physical Exam:

Elevated B/P

Protein in urine

Increased weight {>3 lb per week]

PRE-DISPOSING FACTORS:

Nulliparty

Multi-gestational (twins)

Extremes of age for pregnancy

Family history

Diabetes

Hypertension
