Welcome to the Administrative Assistance reading room. You can request assistance from administrators for handling a variety of problems here and alert them about problems which may require special actions not normally used during regular content editing. Please be patient as administrators are often quite busy with either their own projects or trying to perform general maintenance and cleanup.

You can deal with most vandalism yourself: fix it, then warn the user. If there is repeated vandalism by one user, lots of vandalism on a single page, or vandalism from many users, tell an admin here, or in #wikibooks (say !admin to get attention).

For more general questions and assistance that doesn't require an administrator, please use the Assistance Reading Room.

Import cleanup help request

On the English Wikipedia, importers have the ability to merge histories (see also: w:Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/Archive 214#RfC: Enable the mergehistory permission for importers) and I somehow did not realize that they don't on here as well. Because of that, I was unable to fix what happened here, so I have to request the following:

  1. Please delete all of the pages here
  2. Please merge the histories of these pages with their corresponding subpages of Character Encodings/Code Tables/MS-DOS (e.g. Code page 778 and Character Encodings/Code Tables/MS-DOS/Code page 778)
I think I've done all of these! MarcGarver (discusscontribs) 14:37, 19 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much! JJPMaster (she/they) 14:39, 19 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

The second problem occurred when I tried to use the "import to a subpage" feature, which means that an update to phab:T349560 may be in order. Courtesy pings: @Leaderboard, Kittycataclysm, MarcGarver:. JJPMaster (she/they) 11:14, 19 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

change happens slowly here and new features rarely get deployed until someone gets interested in it. Mergehistory is one of those things. Despite it being available for ten years, nobody has needed to think about whether it should be made available to usergroups other than admins. MarcGarver (discusscontribs) 14:22, 19 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
@JJPMaster That being said: nothing stops you from proposing the change, which you can do it here. Personally I think it's a good idea, and support adding mergehistory for importers and importuploaders. Leaderboard (discusscontribs) 08:28, 20 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
I have no issues with this. It makes sense to me that importers should be able to history merge. —Kittycataclysm (discusscontribs) 13:14, 20 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Proposal: Grant importers and import uploaders mergehistory

It seems like this proposal has some support above already. It would allow members of the transwiki and import groups to use Special:MergeHistory to merge page histories. It would not allow them to use the traditional delete-then-partially-undelete method to do the same.

@JJPMaster This has been done: phab:T382785. Leaderboard (discusscontribs) 03:18, 7 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Protected page edit request

Please make the following two changes to Wikibooks:General disclaimer:

  1. Replace "CC-BY-SA" with "CC BY-SA" per the CC style guide ([1])
  2. Replace "Wikipedia articles" with "Wikibooks pages".

Done, although you'll see that Wikimedia generally does use CC-BY-SA even if CC doesn't like it! E.g., see the text below the minor edit / watch this page checkboxes when you edit any page. MarcGarver (discusscontribs) 14:31, 10 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Good day admins. I've blocked said IP (LTA) for 31 hours, please review and adjust the block accordingly. Thanks. --Min☠︎rax«¦talk¦» 10:29, 16 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

This IP is an open proxy, so it probably should be blocked for at least 1 year. I am technically able to perform this task, but doing so would violate the terms of my request for adminship. JJPMaster (she/they) 11:44, 16 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Open proxies should be handled by stewards though their global blocking procedures - that way we don't have to manage them ourselves. Leaderboard (discusscontribs) 12:23, 16 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oh, thanks for letting me know—I guess I'm still used to the en.wikipedia way of doing things where open proxies are blocked both locally and globally. JJPMaster (she/they) 13:32, 16 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Request for expansion of my limited adminship

Note: This is not a request for an extension in length, but for an expansion of the tasks I'm allowed to do.

I would like the terms of my adminship to be amended to include the following:

(f) Deleting and moving files in relation to the process of emptying Category:Presumed GFDL images.

This would include deleting files that have not had licensing information added after the grace period, and deleting files where licensing has been confirmed and that have thus been moved to Commons. JJPMaster (she/they) 16:26, 18 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

See also: WB:PROP#Presumed GFDL images. JJPMaster (she/they) 23:58, 18 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
I really think the time has come for you to apply for permanent adminship, tbh. --SHB2000 (discusscontribs) 00:04, 19 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
@JJPMaster The policy allows an administrator to amend, so I'll allow you to do this as well if you want. Leaderboard (discusscontribs) 02:10, 19 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
I am also fine with this. —Kittycataclysm (discusscontribs) 13:33, 19 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Did this violate the terms of my adminship?

In accordance with the above amendment allowing me to delete files in order to help me empty CAT:GFDL, I undeleted a non-free use template that had been deleted back when strategy guides weren't allowed (see the log entry), as well as its associated talk page and the category it populated, so that I could use a script to add the tag to files with unclear information. However, the page was technically a template, rather than a file per se. Did I exceed my authority here? JJPMaster (she/they) 03:44, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Upon further consideration, I have re-deleted the template and imported an equivalent from en.wikipedia, and have also re-deleted the talk page. If anyone requests it here, I will re-delete the category as well, although I didn't because I thought its content was trivial. JJPMaster (she/they) 04:23, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Technically yes you did, but in this case it's OK. Don't worry about it. Leaderboard (discusscontribs) 04:27, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Vuara reported by JJPMaster

This user appears to have made many pages c. 2004 that were closely paraphrased or synthesized copyright violations of papers, forum posts, and spam websites. I'd like to ask any other administrators to give this a second look in case I've missed anything. JJPMaster (she/they) 04:01, 9 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
