Administrative divisions of Mongolia/Vertical Axis
Part 1: Vertical axis
[edit | edit source]Vertical axis (Mongolian: Bosoo tenkhleg) has been the main confluence of economic activities in Mongolia for some time and it is the region where majority of the country's population lives. This is the intersecting and surrounding area around the old Khyagt-Huree-Zamyn-Ud route which surpasses the country from its border with Russia to China. Huree is an old name for Ulaanbaatar, country's capital.
The vertical axis compromises the arable land in the north until the vast Gobi in the south: from north to south - Huvsgul, Bulgan, Orkhon, Selenge, Darkhan-Uul, Tuv, Ulaanbaatar, Govisumber, Dundgovi, Dornogovi and Umnugovi. Traditionally, government-supported taxonomy for 'Central region' consists of Selenge, Darkhan-Uul, Tuv, Ulaanbaatar, Govisumber, Dundgovi, Dornogovi and Umnugovi, while placing Huvsgul, Bulgan and Orkhon aimags in 'Khangai region'.
Geographically, Huvsgul, Bulgan and Umnugovi lie far away from the rail system. However, recent activities in economy and infrastructure seem to bring those aimags more and more closer to the vertical axis.
