Analytical Forensic Pharmacology/Melting Point

From Wikibooks, open books for an open world

The melting point (MP) of a substance is the temperature at which it changes state from solid to liquid. Melting points are often used to classify organic compounds and to obtain an understanding of the purity of an analyte. A large database of MPs are available for use by analytical chemists and forensic scientists. The more impurity is present, the lower the melting point. Eventually, a minimum melting point will be reached. The mixing ratio that results in the lowest possible melting point is known as the eutectic point.
