Annotations to The Complete Peanuts: 1993 to 1994 by Charles M. Schulz (Fantagraphics Books, 2014. ISBN 1606997734

  • p. 10 (January 21, 1993) "The voice of the turtle is heard in our land:" Song of Songs, 2:12. See annotation of April 27, 1992. In the present case, Schulz chooses the original King James Version wording of "turtle," instead of "turtledove," for its obvious comical effect.
  • p. 18 (February 8, 1993) The movie A River Runs Through It was released on October 9, 1992, and earned popular and critical acclaim in the subsequent months. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards in 1993 and won Best Cinematography.
  • p. 39 (March 30, 1993) This, of course, is History.
  • p. 40 (April 2, 1993) See annotation of August 14, 1984. Note that Roy Hobbs, although famous outside the Peanuts strip, remains a fictional character.
  • p. 51 (April 26, 1993) The Grunge movement characterized the youth of the 1990s in the same way that the Hippy movement did for the 1960s. Although the term refers primarily to a music genre, eventually a distinctive clothing trend and an outlook on life stemmed from it. Snoopy's appearance here is not a bad illustration of it.
  • p. 54 (May 5, 1993) Sally is watching, of course, Barney & Friends, that aired for the first time about a year earlier, on April 6, 1992. The show quickly became a large success among children and a short-lived cultural phenomenon as well. While Barney-inspired toys and other products were issued for children, a stream of anti-Barney jokes started to circulate among adults, framing the main character as vapid or irritating.
  • p. 178 (February 17, 1994) When Mort Walker first saw the drawing of Snoopy on his dog house impersonating the WWI flying ace, he was so puzzled by Schulz's jump into an alternate reality that he thought this would ruin the strip. He says he exclaimed: "Where did he get the helmet?" [1]
  • p. 289 (November 3, 1994) The movie Forrest Gump was released on July 6, 1994, and was probably the most talked about film of the year. It was the object of all kinds of references in the media.
