Joyce's principal model for Lenehan was Michael Hart, a friend's of Joyce's father who died around 1900; Hart too had a habit of speaking French.[1] See 657.20, where Bloom recalls the death of Hart.
anno Domini (Latin) in the year of our Lord.[2] Lenehan is using the phrase Anno Domini in a Pickwickian sense, meaning years.
