[edit | edit source]Semper paratus (Latin) Always ready.[1] This is the motto of several families, including Armitage, Clifford, Constable, Dallas, Hopkinson, Johnstone, Knowles, Leckey, Mounsey, Phillpotts, Roydes, Stewart, Upton, Usticke, Welles and Wells. Of these only Clifford is relevant to Bloom's life, and that is probably only a coincidence.
L. L. D. honoris causa (Latin) Doctor of Laws for the sake of the honour.[2] That is to say, Bloom imagines that he has been conferred with an honorary doctorate. LL. D. is an abbreviation for the Latin Legum Doctor (Doctor of Laws), the double L referring to Canon Law and Civil Law.
