[edit | edit source]White develops his Queen's Knight to support 3.e4, sometimes called the Veresov Opening. After Black's usual reply 2...d5, White may respond with 3.Bg5, leading to the Richter-Veresov Attack. Often transposes into the Chigorin Defence, the French Defence, or less commonly the Pirc Defence.
This position may also be reached via the move order 1.Nc3 Nf6 2.d4
