Coffee liqueur is a sweet alcoholic beverage made with distilled spirits and flavored with coffee. Making it at home allows you to customize the flavor and sweetness to your liking.
Ingredients
[edit | edit source]- 4 cups strong brewed coffee (cold)
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 cups vodka or rum
- 2 vanilla beans, split (or 2 tsp vanilla extract)
Procedure
[edit | edit source]- In a large saucepan, combine the brewed coffee and sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring continuously until the sugar is fully dissolved. Remove from heat and let it cool to room temperature.
- Once cooled, stir in the vodka or rum.
- If using vanilla beans, scrape out the seeds and add both the seeds and the pods to the mixture. If using vanilla extract, add and stir it in.
- Transfer the mixture to a glass bottle or jar and seal tightly. Store it in a cool, dark place for at least one week, gently shaking the bottle daily.
- After the infusion period, strain the mixture to remove the vanilla pods and any sediment. Transfer the cleared liquid back to the bottle for storage.
Notes, tips, and variations
[edit | edit source]- For a richer flavor, replace half of the vodka or rum with a dark rum or brandy.
- You can also infuse with additional flavors such as cinnamon sticks, cocoa nibs, or hazelnuts. Just remember to strain them out after the infusion period.
- For a lighter liqueur, reduce the sugar by half.
