Peanut butter is a spread made from roasted ground peanuts.

Characteristics

[edit | edit source]

Peanut butter is often classified as either smooth/creamy or chunky—chunky peanut butter has small pieces of peanut remaining in it, while smooth peanut butter has been fully ground to eliminate any remaining pieces or grit. Peanut butter may also be either natural or stabilized. Natural peanut butter is simply ground peanuts with optional flavoring, and this type will eventually separate into solid and oil layers. Stabilized peanut butter includes stabilizers such as hydrogenated fats to prevent the separation of the oil from the peanut solids.

Production

[edit | edit source]

Peanut butter can be made at home by grinding roasted peanuts in a blender or food processor until smooth. Salt and/or sugar can be added, and some commercial types include additional stabilizers.

Peanut butter can be used simply as a spread or incorporated into a variety of dishes and baked goods.
