Characters

These are the characters in Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. The game's plot centers around a single main character named Benjamin. Benjamin begins his quest solo, but he meets allies along the way: Kaeli, Tristam, Phoebe, and Reuben. These other playable characters accompany Benjamin at different junctions in the plot, but no two allies accompany Benjamin at the same time, limiting the player to a two-person party system. Several other non-playable characters also play important roles in the game's plot, particularly the Old Man, who acts as Benjamin's guide and mentor.

Most of the characters in Final Fantasy Mystic Quest are human, with few exceptions. The Old Man later reveals that he is a crystal in the guise of a human, while a race of talking trees lives in the Level Forest.

Playable characters

[edit | edit source]
File:FFMQArtBenjamin.jpg

The main protagonist of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, Benjamin (ザッシュ, Zasshu, Zash in Japan) "was the most normal youth you could imagine....Although Benjamin seemed mature beyond his years, he still dreamed of being more than he was -- faster, stronger, and more daring." Benjamin craves adventure, and is seen climbing the Hill of Destiny at the beginning of the game. During his climb, his village is destroyed in an earthquake, and he is chosen by the Crystal of Light to fulfill the knight's prophecy and save the world. Although he initially uses a sword, Benjamin later learns to use a variety of weapons, from axes to bombs to claws. As the game's main character, he is the only one capable of gaining experience points.

File:FFMQArtKaeli.jpg

Kaeli

[edit | edit source]

Kaeli (カレン, Karen, Karen in Japan) is a spirited girl living in the village of Foresta, and has the unique ability to speak with trees. Kaeli is concerned for the welfare of the Level Forest and her dying village; despite the protests of her overprotective mother, she agrees to help Benjamin after seeing proof of the forest's suffering. She is also worried over the whereabouts of her father, Captain Mac. Kaeli is poisoned after an encounter with a minotaur, but recovers to help Benjamin later in the game. She wields an axe, which she later gives to Benjamin.

File:FFMQArtTristam.jpg

Tristam

[edit | edit source]

Tristam (ロック, Rokku, Rock or Lock in Japan) is a cocky, self-proclaimed treasure hunter. He has a habit of showing up unexpectedly and leaving on a whim. Tristam first meets Benjamin in the Sand Temple, where he offers to sell him Elixir. Benjamin can't meet Tristam's extremely high asking price, so pays him by accompanying him to the Bone Dungeon, where Tristam teaches him how to use bombs. After defeating Flamerous Rex, Tristam claims his treasure and leaves. Thereafter, he is frequently seen traveling with Spencer in search of new treasure.

Due to his trade, Tristam is highly resourceful, teaching Benjamin how to use bombs and giving him Elixir, the multi-key, and the dragon claw (which doubles as a grappling hook). Much to Benjamin's annoyance, Tristam affectionately refers to him as "kid". Tristam is the game's only character to have his own theme music. He battles using replenishable shuriken.

File:FFMQArtPhoebe.jpg

Phoebe

[edit | edit source]

Phoebe (フェイ, Fei, Faye in Japan) "possesses a warrior's heart and a princess's grace." She first meets Benjamin at the Libra Temple, where she's looking to restore the frozen town of Aquaria, and in turn save her trapped grandfather, Spencer. She can be impetuous, as when she collapses a tunnel (despite Benjamin's protests) while trying to save Captain Mac. She fights using a claw, which she later gives to Benjamin, after which she battles with a bow and arrow. Phoebe is at Benjamin's side when he battles the Dark King.

File:Ffmq reuben.png

Reuben

[edit | edit source]

Reuben (レッド, Reddo, Red in Japan) is a powerful, armored youth living in Fireburg. He agrees to aid Benjamin in his quest for the Crystal of Fire on the condition that they first rescue Reuben's trapped father, Arion. After obtaining the crystal, Benjamin and Reuben head to Windia. En route, they are ambushed on the Rope Bridge. Reuben spars with the enemy, but is knocked off the Rope Bridge onto a cliff outcropping. With no way to reach Reuben, Benjamin continues his quest. Reuben later recovers to assist Benjamin in saving Kaeli's father, Captain Mac. Onboard Captain Mac's ship, it turns out that Reuben hadn't completely recovered from the injury sustained from the fall, and he ends up bedridden until the end of the game, where he joins the others to see Benjamin off. Reuben wields a hefty morning star.

Non-playable characters

[edit | edit source]
File:FFMQArtElder.jpg

Old Man

[edit | edit source]

The enigmatic figure known as the Old Man (ホワイト, Howaito, White in Japan) serves as a guide and mentor to Benjamin. He travels around on a floating cloud, an unusual mode of transportation later used by the Black Mage in Square's Chocobo Racing. After charging Benjamin with fulfilling the knight's prophecy, he periodically appears at critical junctions throughout the game to dispense terse bits of cryptic information. He has a tendency to vanish immediately after speaking, often leaving Benjamin confused. After Benjamin defeats the Dark King, the Old Man reveals himself to be the fifth crystal, the Crystal of Light, in the guise of a human. He congratules Benjamin, saying that "evil can't thrive if you keep hope alive, use your courage, and respect your world." He then bids Benjamin farewell and leaves.

Captain Mac

[edit | edit source]

Kaeli's father, Captain Mac (マック, Makku, simply Mac in Japan), has long been studying the knight's prophecy. On his way back from doing research from his ship, the lake bording Windia dries up, leaving his ship landlocked on a rock ledge. On land, his ship is stormed by monsters, but with the help of Otto, Benjamin and Reuben save Mac. Captain Mac and Spencer are good friends; a girl in Aquaria remarks that "they're both kind of weird."

Spencer

[edit | edit source]

Spencer (ジャック, Jakku, Jack in Japan) is Phoebe's grandfather and a good friend of Captain Mac's. He lives in a tunnel underneath Aquaria and ends up trapped there when Aquaria freezes over. He is saved when Benjamin and Phoebe recover the Crystal of Water to restore Aquaria to its normal state. Despite his age, he still has a penchant for exploring, and leaves with Tristam in tow in search of "an amazing armor."

Arion

[edit | edit source]

Reuben's father, Arion (アリオン), is concerned over the unusual activity of a nearby volcano, and so joins his friend in climbing the volcano to investigate the source. While going through an abandoned mine, the two are ambushed by monsters. Arion's friend cuts and runs, leaving Arion trapped behind a huge boulder. Arion is saved by Benjamin and Reuben, and later repays Benjamin with Thunder Rock, which powers Otto's Rainbow Road extension, allowing them to reach Spencer's place to save Captain Mac.

Otto (オットー, Ottō) is a mechanic and inventor living in Windia; his most famous invention is the Rainbow Road, a device connecting various islands to Windia's mainland region. He also built a tower north of Windia, but it has since been invaded by Pazuzu. His daughter Norma traveled to the tower for unknown reasons, but ended up trapped as wind from Mt. Gale broke the power source for the Rainbow Road. He asks Benjamin to stop the wind from Mt. Gale so as to rescue his daughter.

Norma

[edit | edit source]

Otto's daughter, Norma (ノーマ, Nōma), is trapped at the base level of Pazuzu's Tower, and is very grateful to be rescued.

Giant Tree

[edit | edit source]

The Giant Tree is one of a race of talking trees and the king of the Living Forest. He resembles the Great Deku Tree from The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, but like the Ents in The Lord of the Rings, he is mobile. He agrees to carry Benjamin and Kaeli across the Living Forest to the Windia region after the two destroy the monsters that have taken residence inside of him.

Major villains

[edit | edit source]

Vile Evils

[edit | edit source]

The four major enemies in the game are the Vile Evils, creatures which have stolen the crystals that keep the earth's elements in check. They are analogous to the Four Fiends from Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy IV, and Final Fantasy IX. They are servants of the Dark King, a wicked man who wishes to rule the world. At the end of the game, the player must ascend Doom Castle, at the top of which the Dark King resides; on each of the Doom Castle's floors, the player must defeat a second, more powerful version of each of the Vile Evils.

Flamerous Rex

[edit | edit source]

Flamerous Rex, a giant, zombie Tyrannosaurus, is the boss of the Bone Dungeon. Flamerous Rex fulfills Lich and Scarmiglione's role in previous Final Fantasy games as the undead ruler of the Crystal of Earth. It causes destructive earthquakes, one of which is the catalyst for the beginning of the game. Since it is undead, a simple Life spell instantly kills it. It has a double in the Doom Castle called Skullrus Rex. Oddly enough, an Exit spell works just as well, and you can have it in time for the rematch in Doom Castle.

Ice Golem

[edit | edit source]

The Ice Golem resides in the Ice Pyramid and guards the Crystal of Water. The Ice Golem is a giant humanoid monster whose body is composed entirely of blocks of ice. It has turned Aquaria's lake into a giant sheet of ice and covered the region in thick blankets of snow. It has a double in the Doom Castle called Stone Golem. Like the one before, the Stone Golem can be defeated by an Exit spell, to further hasten your climb up the Doom Castle.

Dualhead Hydra

[edit | edit source]

The Dualhead Hydra, a two-headed dragon, is ecountered at the Lava Dome. It causes Fireburg's volcano to erupt violently, which in turn triggers massive earthquakes. It has a double in the Doom Castle called Twinhead Wyvern.

Pazuzu

[edit | edit source]

Pazuzu invaded Otto's tower and claimed it as his own. A giant, demonic Eagle dressed in finery and jewels, he is the chief lieutenant to the Dark King. Using the power of the Crystal of Wind, Pazuzu summons gale force winds to ravage the Windia region. He has a double in the Doom Castle called Zuh.

Dark King

[edit | edit source]
File:Ffmq darkking.png

The Dark King (ダークキング, Dāku Kingu) is the archetypal embodiment of evil. Captain Mac first discovers that the Dark King is the true enemy of the world, and finds out that the Dark King resides in Doom Castle, an extension of the Focus Tower. When Benjamin finally meets him, he reveals that the so-called knight's prophecy was a rumor he started years ago and threatens to enslave Benjamin along with the rest of mankind. The Dark King appears as a grotesque, large, green-skinned man dressed in royal regalia. When weakened in battle, he reveals his true form, and changes into a giant tarantula with a demonic face. In his true form, it's possible to instantly kill him by casting Cure on him, which for some reason causes him to take over 22000 points of damage!

Characters/Benjamin

Benjamin is the main protagonist of the game. When the game starts, he is climbing up a mountain where his village used to be. At the summit, he encounters the old man. After a brief conversation, a monster attacks which Benjamin easily defeats.

He is the only character who has multiple weapons. These range from Swords Axes Bombs and Claws. He is also the only character who gets upgrades to his weapons and Armour at various points in the game. For example he receives the bombs from Tristem in the sand caves and gets an upgrade (the Jumbo bombs) from Phoebe later in the game.

Once Benjamin obtains a new weapon or armour it is automatically equipped and previous versions of the weapon can no longer be used. For example after getting the battle axe Benjamin can no longer use the standard axe. As Benjamin gains levels his weapons (except for the bombs) increase their attack power, e.g. from attack power 20 to attack power 24

Swords

[edit | edit source]

For the Most part of the game, Axes are the strongest weapons.

  • Axe: the first grade, it is obtained in the Level Forest area.
  • Battle Axe: this upgraded axe does a lot more damage than the axe (about 1.5 more)
  • Giants Axe: the strongest axe, it is the second strongest weapon in the game (After Excalibur.)

Locations

The setting for Final Fantasy Mystic Quest takes place on a single continent of an unnamed world (simply referred to as "the World."), which is divided into four distinct regions: Foresta, Aquaria, Fireburg, and Windia. The welfare of each region is determined by the state of one of four shining crystals: earth, water, fire, and wind, respectively. At the beginning of the game, each region is missing its crystal, and is plagued by decay, climate change, or natural disasters. When Benjamin recovers a crystal for a given region, the area reverts back to its normal state, with the change manifesting itself on the world map.

The world of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest as it appears in the beginning of the game

Foresta

[edit | edit source]

The Foresta region is split into two areas: a forest and a desert. The region prospers under the Crystal of Earth, but has been in a state of decay since it was stolen. The village of Foresta is located on the outskirts of the Level Forest, and all of the village's citizens, who take residence in the massive stumps of hollowed trees, are rapidly aging.

Hill of Destiny

[edit | edit source]

The game opens with Benjamin climbing the Hill of Destiny. While he is exploring an earthquake strikes, destroying his village and the Hill of Destiny.

Level Forest

[edit | edit source]

Like the village of Foresta itself, the trees of the Level Forest are dying. It is only after Benjamin brings proof of the forest's suffering that Kaeli agrees to help him, although she is ambushed and poisoned by a minotaur posing as a tree.

Sand Temple

[edit | edit source]

The Sand Temple serves as an entrance to the desert extension of the Foresta region.

Bone Dungeon

[edit | edit source]

The Bone Dungeon is located in the center of the region's desert. The name is derived from the dungeon's passages, many of which are formed from the rib cages of enormous monsters. Flamerous Rex, the first of the four Vile Evils, holds the Crystal of Earth and the Sand Coin here.

Aquaria

[edit | edit source]

The region of Aquaria is completely frozen over in the absence of the Crystal of Water. The town of Aquaria is situated on a large lake.

Libra Temple

[edit | edit source]

Benjamin first meets Phoebe in the Libra Temple, which holds a warp to the Life Temple.

Life Temple

[edit | edit source]

The Life Temple houses a spring of precious Wakewater, a substance used to heal. Nearly all of it has since dried up.

Spencer's Place

[edit | edit source]

Spencer's place is a tunnel located underneath a house in Aquaria and, when Otto's Rainbow Road is operating, connects the region to Windia.

Wintry Cave

[edit | edit source]

The Wintry Cave is located in the most northeastern position of the world. Benjamin and Phoebe travel to the cave to find the Gemini Crest, an item allowing them to warp between the Libra Temple and the Life Temple.

Falls Basin

[edit | edit source]

The Falls Basin is a frozen over waterfall that drains into the lake near Aquaria. It leads to the Ice Pyramid.

Ice Pyramid

[edit | edit source]

The Ice Pyramid is the base of the second of the four Vile Evils, the Ice Golem.

Fireburg

[edit | edit source]

The Fireburg region rests entirely upon a large plateau. The region's volcano is active, and its eruptions trigger perpetual earthquakes. The city of Fireburg is lively, and a rock band plays at the hotel.

Sealed Temple

[edit | edit source]

The region's Mine has been abandoned ever since monsters invaded it, and a large boulder blocks the Mine's route to the volcano.

Volcano

[edit | edit source]

The area's volcano is the only one in the world. It has recently been active, and its eruptions have triggered the earthquakes that plague the region.

Lava Dome

[edit | edit source]

The Lava Dome rests atop the volcano, and is ruled by the third of the four Vile Evils, Dualhead Hydra.

Windia

[edit | edit source]

The Windia region is a set of islands connected by bridges over a large lake, although the lake is currently dried out. Without the Crystal of Wind to keep the wind's speed in check, the region is ravaged by high-speed winds originating in Mount Gale. The village of Windia is the home of Otto, the inventor of the Rainbow Road, a device connecting the Aquaria and Windia regions via Spencer's Place.

Rope Bridge

[edit | edit source]

The Rope Bridge connects the Focus Tower with the Living Forest, acting as a gateway to the Windia region.

Alive Forest

[edit | edit source]

The Alive Forest is home to a race of talking trees, much like the Ents from The Lord of the Rings. The guardian of the forest is the Giant Tree.

Kaidge Temple

[edit | edit source]

Windhole Temple

[edit | edit source]

Mount Gale

[edit | edit source]

Mount Gale is the source of the high-speed winds ravaging the Windia region.

Pazuzu's Tower

[edit | edit source]

Pazuzu's Tower was built by Otto, but later invaded and claimed by Pazuzu, the final of the four Vile Evils. Pazuzu's Tower has many floors, all of which can be accessed through its elevator. Switches are located on the even-numbered floors; when flicked, the switches prevent the elevator from going beyond specific floors.

Ship Dock

[edit | edit source]

Mac's Ship

[edit | edit source]

Mac's Ship is operated by Captain Mac, but it has since been beached on a rock ledge as the region's lake has dried up.

Focus Tower

[edit | edit source]

The massive Focus Tower stands in the center of the world, and serves as a gateway to each of the world's four regions.

Doom Castle

[edit | edit source]

The Doom Castle is an extension of the Focus Tower, and is the base of the Dark King, the ultimate evil.

Walkthrough

As part of the intro you get into your first fight, simple enough, just keep attacking, after the rest of the cut scene you start the game in level forest

Talk to the guy in the blue, jump over him and move the rock, he gives you a withered stick and tells you to give it to 'Kaeli' in foresta. Head left and leave the forest and head west to Foresta.

Talk to everyone starting with the house on the bottom right, there is a chest there containing 3 cure positions, talk to he girl and she says you can sleep in the bed if you want to heal. In the house at the top right of the town you see the guy from the forest and he tells you that you can have what's in the chest at the back of the house, leave the house and cross the bridge then jump over the stepping stones and go into the house. Open the chest to get your first spell CURE leave and return to the centre of the town and talk to the people there, one of them tells you the earth crystal is in the Bone Dungeon to the north. Go into the house nearest where you came in to town and talk to the girl in the green dress. The is 'Kaeli', she joins you, at the back of the house there is a chest containing 3 cure potions. leave the house and the town and go back to level forest. 'Kaeli' will cut down the trees that where blocking the way to the monsters before. you can also now get to a chest that was blocked by the rock that you moved earlier which contains 3 cure potions. Make your way around the forest killing all the monsters you can get too. At the top right there is a chest containing 3 heal potions and a chest containing 3 cures at the top left. After collecting these and killing everything go to the tree with the orange outline at the top of the forest and 'Keali' will cut it down, as she does she is attacked by a mintaur that poisons her and attacks you. Easy fight just keep your characters health topped up and you will be fine. At the end of the fight 'Kaeli's' mother shows up. 'Kaeli' leaves the party but gives you her axe. you can now cut down trees by pressing 'A' you can switch between weapons using 'L & R'. Go to the bottom left part of the forest and cut down the trees to get to the monster and the chest there. The chest contains 3 heals. leave the forest and head back to Foresta. at the bottom right of the town there is a chest behind some trees, cut them down to get the chest then head to the house that you can sleep in and rest up. if you want to you can go back to level forest, all the monsters and chests have been reset apart from the boss minitaur note only the brown boxes reset, not the red and gold treasure chests after re-doing level forest or straight away your choice head north to the battlefield, complete all 10 battles to clear the field, note some of these battlefields give you items as rewards. this one doesn't but its good to do them for the experience anyway after the battlefield carry on north to the Sand Temple.

Go through the door and check the treasure chest. Its Empty. After a short cut scene 'Tristam' joins you. Take his advise and go to the battlefield to the west. After clearing all 10 battles you are rewarded with the 'Charm' giving you extra defence. After the battlefield head north of the Sand Temple

There are 3 chests in this room, the ones on the left and right sides of the room both contain ninja stars for 'tristam', the one in the middle contains 3 cure positions. After Killing everything go through the door to the next room. Jump over the water using the Turtle Shells as stepping stones then down the steps on the right into the water. go through the skull on the bottom left to the adjoining room and use the stairs to get out of the water, as you approach the blocked door 'Tristam' shows you how to use bombs, go back to the previous room and use a bomb on the skeleton that was blocking the path at the top, open the chest there to get the steel shield then go back and through the door that 'Tristam' cleared.

Work your way up to the top right to the blocked door, use a bomb on it to get to the chest containing ninja stars then work your way to the top left and go down the stairs.

Kill the monster at the bottom right of the room and get the bombs from the chest behind it then kill the skeletons at the top. Use a bomb on the rigs to clear them then go right through the wall. Use the turtle shells as stepping stones to get to the chest containing more ninja stars then head back the way you came and go through the skull to the left. At the bottom left there is a small loop path with a chest in it. kill the monsters and open the chest to get the ninja stars then work your way up around the flowing sand, once again use a bomb to get rid of the ribs and carry on around the flowing sand then down the stairs.

Kill the monster on the left to grab the ninja stars from the chest then use a bomb on the skull to open the jaws, go through the door at the end to find a chest with 3 seeds then head back through and go through the passage on the left. Go round the flowing sand killing the monsters and use a bomb on the skull again. go through the door at the end to find a chest containing your first attacking spell 'Quake'. Go back again and through the passage on the right. Kill the monster there and use a bomb to blow open the jaws. Go through the door to meet the boss. make sure your characters are at full health. Standard attacking should work fine against him and note, Tristam's life spell not only brings characters back to life, if you use it on someone who is still alive it works as a full cure and removes all negative status. Just keep your characters healed and keep attacking. This fight should be over in a couple of rounds.

Open all the chests containing ninja stars, cure potions and the 'Sand Coin', 'Tristam' keeps the 'Dragon Claw' for himself and gives you the 'Elixer'. As you go to leave 'Tristam' leaves. Head out of the dungeon and back to Forsta

When you get there you find the village changed and everyone is young. The chests have reset so collect them all and sleep in the bed in the house at the bottom right. Go to 'Kaeli's' house and give her the 'Elixer'. After talking with 'Kaeli' you need to head to Aquaria to find Spencer. To do this you need to make your first trip through Focus Tower. To get there you need to head north to the Sand Temple then head east. Clear the Battlefield, return to Foresta to rest and heal then carry on to Focus Tower.

In focus tower go to the left and talk to the guy on the cloud from the intro then head up the stairs.
