Today in 1994 saw the first public (beta) release of the Debian operating system. It is the mother of many other remarkable GNU/Linux distributions. It introduced modern software packaging, a leap forward in the way we access and secure software. This made software distribution particularly accessible and usable and contributed to its outstanding popularity and lasting influence on the field. Its social standards and decentralized, community-based development model broke new ground.[1]
