Today in 1992 Yggdrasil Linux/GNU/X was announced, the world’s first live CD Linux distribution. It drastically reduced the effort required to achieve a running Linux system/X server: Advertised as a “plug-and-play Linux”, it automatically detected hardware and configured itself accordingly. It pioneered IDE CD-ROM drive support when the CD-ROM driver situation was still very poor on Linux. The boot process had to be initiated with a floppy disk, since no standard for booting from CD was devised yet. It was ahead of its time, with available technology not yet fast enough for comfortable use. [1]
