Goats/Pastures

From Wikibooks, open books for an open world

Pastures can be either fields or woodland areas, the latter generally preferred. When possible maintain at least one more pasture than herd groups, to allow pastures to rest.

See Fencing.

Pastures are best defined in early autumn when most plants will be visible for inspection. Grub out any poisonous plants before letting the goats graze, particularly highly toxic plants such as snakeroot, false hellebore, ericaceous plants, aconite, foxglove, etc.

Over winter, knock down or remove stone fruit trees (bark is edible and nutritious).

Make sure to leave access for tractors.

Check fences after weather events.

Make sure shelters are available for rain and snow.

Make sure water is available.

Maintain pathways around both the inside and outside perimeters of the pasture to ensure easy maintenance of the fence and access to the goats.
