Gyakuten Kenji 2/Episode 3: The Inherited Turnabout/Middle, Part 4
The next morning, you return to the Detention Center to visit Master. Kate is already there, worried about how Master is doing. However, Detective Badd enters the visitor's room with Master. Master isn't holding up very well - he was kept up all night for interrogation, and his hair has turned white. He was supposed to be interrogated for far longer, but Badd interrupted it to allow you to see him. Master says his sugar levels are low, so he's not as energetic as usual. Maybe you have something that will cheer him up in the Court Record? Present the Chocolates (チョコレート). It's against the rules to give anything to suspects in the Detention Center, but luckily Badd agrees to help you out. After eating, Master is back to his old self. He says that the food in the Detention Center - salt beef and stew - is "tasteless". Badd leaves for the crime scene, after informing you that they have confirmed that the true identity of Isaac Dover was indeed Pierre Hoquet the sculptor. He wasn't actually French, though, nor was his real name Pierre Hoquet - that was merely a nom de plume. Dover was also known for his greed, charging hundreds of thousands for a single work, and was constantly in debt.
Talk to Master:
- The contestants (参加者について Sankasha ni tsuite): Delicia's desserts had a "fantastic" design, but were disqualified because she broke the rules. Gustavia's flavours and design were good up until the semi-final, but were both lacking in the final. Also, something was odd about his semi-final entry - both Gustavia's and Dover's entries tasted the same. Dover's sherbet sculptures were "heavenly", especially the lyre...?
- The delicious lyre (竪琴のお菓子について Tategoto no okashi ni tsuite): Master ate the strings of the Gemini sculpture's lyre. Master's statement that it was "delicious", however, contradicts Delicia's testimony that it was salty. Master says that this means there "might be a problem" with his sense of taste - a form of a disorder called hypogeusia, which makes him unable to taste salt. He says that, in his mansion, there is a recipe containing a cure for this disorder.
After talking, Kate leaves for the mansion. Master tells her to live for herself, rather than for him, because he is worried about her. He says the only reason she does anything is to make him happy, and he wants her to put herself before him. You also decide to leave for the crime scene soon after. Before going, though, Gregory mentions a plan of his, to take "precautions" against von Karma's interrogations. He expects the police to try and force Master to confess, but promises that he will win Master his freedom, if Master does not give in.
Back at the mansion, Badd informs you that von Karma has denied you permission to investigate anywhere beyond the fountain patio. Apparently, von Karma still hasn't received the autopsy report, and the only people in the mansion are Kate and the police. He doesn't plan on making it easy for you...
Investigation: Contest Venue - Fountain Patio / 捜査 ~コンテスト会場・噴水広場~
[edit | edit source]Start by talking to the forensics officer by the fountain. He reports that chocolate and sherbet has been mixed with the fountain's water, matching Master's chocolate and Dover's sherbet. They also detected blood. Recall your investigation of the crime scene - in the chocolate chest in which Dover was found, there was a large piece of chocolate missing where a bloodstain should have been. Given this, whose blood is that in the fountain likely to be? Present Isaac Dover's profile (氷堂 伊作). After some further testing, this is confirmed. The new information on the Victim's Blood (被害者の血液 higaisha no ketsueki) is added to the Court Record.
Talk to Kate, who is standing to the right of the fountain. She shows you a photo of the Semifinal Desserts (準決勝時のお菓子 junkesshō-ji no okashi). Delicia's cake is beautifully designed, as are Dover's and Gustavia's... but something about them seems odd. As Master said, they tasted very similar, and they even look a little alike, too. Kate also mentions that Gustavia's son visited him in every round except the final, during which he was nowhere to be seen. She also gives you the Angel's Recipe Book (究極のレシピ kyūkyoku no reshipi), which is not a dessert recipe, but actually a recipe for a cure for hypogeusia.
Talk to Kate:
- The Angel’s Recipe (究極のレシピの正体 Kyūkyoku no reshipi no shōtai): The Angel's Recipe is actually a recipe book for drugs which have not yet been released to the public. It's offered as a prize, because Master is the only heir to the chairman of the "Master Group", a large pharmaceutical company famous for making Coldkiller X.
- Master Group (天下一グループについて Tenkaichi gurūpu ni tsuite): When Master's parents died, the Angel's Recipe was his inheritance. People tried to obtain the Angel's Recipe, because of its high financial value, so Master decided to give it to someone he deemed worthy - namely, whoever could beat him in a dessert-making contest. The Master Group objected, so they entered Delicia in the contest. Kate helped her, by telling her about Master's tastes and preferences. That way, Master would have approved Delicia as a suitable heir to the Angel's Recipe, and he would also have avoided trouble with the Master Group.
You still haven't had a chance to speak to Gustavia, and find out why he was in Dover's room. You're also beginning to have doubts about how he and Dover both managed to reach the finals, since Gustavia lacks design skills, and Dover was only good at design... What was the connection between the two? Von Karma shows up, having been eavesdropping on your conversation. Again, he refuses to let you speak to Gustavia. You decide to ask him about Dover and Gustavia's connection instead.
Von Karma's Testimony: Their Connection / 狩魔の証言 ~風見と氷堂の関係~
[edit | edit source]- Gustavia and Dover's relationship?
- It's obvious the only relationship they had was that they happened to participate in the same contest.
- 風見と氷堂の関係だと?
- 偶然同じ菓子コンテストに参加しただけの関係に決まっておる。
Rebuttal: Their Connection / 追求 ~風見と氷堂の関係~
[edit | edit source]Short and sweet... Von Karma really doesn't want you to find out about their connection, but you've probably already worked it out by now. Present the Semifinal Desserts (準決勝時のお菓子) on the second statement. Gustavia isn't known for his design skills, and yet he produced something on par with Dover's dessert... and furthermore, they both had the same flavour. Based on this, it's probable that they collaborated with each other. Von Karma decides to tell you the truth, for once... but says it won't help your case at all.
Von Karma's Testimony: Their Real Connection / 狩魔の証言 ~風見と氷堂の本当の関係~
[edit | edit source]- If you want to know about Gustavia and Dover's connection so badly, I'll tell you.
- Last night, when I interrogated Gustavia, he told me about his connection with Dover.
- Until the day before the finals, they worked on their desserts together.
- そんなに風見と氷堂の関係を知りたいのなら、教えてやろう。
- 昨夜、風見を取り調べた時に、氷堂との関係について話しおったわ。
- 決勝戦の前日までは、互いに協力して菓子を作っていたとな。
Rebuttal: Their Real Connection / 追求 ~風見と氷堂の本当の関係~
[edit | edit source]Present Delicia's Testimony (デリシーの証言) on von Karma's third statement. Remember that Dover was not a chef by trade, and so it would have been difficult for him to produce such delicious sherbet... without the assistance of Gustavia, that is. Von Karma points out that Delicia also said a part of the sherbet was salty, making Dover's entry imperfect. Ray says that Dover's dessert would have taken a long time to make, and wonders how Dover would have had the time to both sculpt his own entry, and assist Gustavia. Ray's idea brings to your mind another possibility - that Dover's sherbet was prepared in advance (前日に作った Zenjitsu ni tsukutta). This makes von Karma's statement true - that they only co-operated until the day before the finals. This means that Gustavia prepared the sherbet the day before the finals, and all Dover had to do during the contest was sculpt it. So why did Dover not help Gustavia in return? If their relationship had gone wrong, that would provide a motive for Gustavia to kill Dover - and the fact Gustavia sneaked into Dover's room after the contest is reason enough to suspect him.
Unfortunately, this turns out to be a trap set by von Karma. He shows you the reason why Gustavia went to Dover's room - a Family Photo (家族の写真 kazoku no shashin) of Gustavia and Dover with their sons. Gustavia stole the photo, because he thought he would be suspected if people discovered he and Dover were acquaintances. With that, von Karma leaves, denouncing you and your investigation as a waste of his time. But what did he mean by "busy"? He should already have enough evidence to prove Master guilty... so why is he still investigating? You remember what Badd told you earlier - he still hasn't received Dover's autopsy report. No autopsy report (剖検記録が無い Bōken kiroku ga nai) is added to your Logic. Also, the bloodstain disappeared (消えた被害者の血痕 Kieta higaisha no kekkon) from the crime scene, and forensics found blood in the water fountain (噴水の血液 Funsui no ketsueki)...
Time for one last Logic puzzle with Gregory Edgeworth. First, connect the Blood in the water fountain (噴水の血液) to Bloodstain disappeared (消えた被害者の血痕). The bloodstain at the crime scene could only have been cleared away if the body was moved first. Did someone else remove the body in order to remove the bloodstain? You receive the Was the body removed? logic (死体はどけられた? Shitai wa dokerareta?). Connect this to No autopsy report (剖検記録が無い). Up until now, you've been investigating under the assumption that the police removed the body... but given the lack of an autopsy report, what if this isn't actually the case? It's clear now that the body was actually removed and hidden by the real killer, which turns the entire case about. And as for von Karma... it seems the rumours of him being willing to forge evidence may be true after all.
Edgeworth confronts von Karma, who says his job is to ensure everyone he prosecutes is found guilty. Edgeworth accuses von Karma of trying to forge evidence, and that the reason he stopped Badd from investigating was to allow him to conceal the fact that Dover's body was never found. The body was removed by the killer to hide the bloodstains, but there was no reason to do so. Von Karma dismisses the disappearing bloodstain as "trivial", unless you can prove where it went. Present the Victim's Blood (被害者の血液). The blood was found alongside Master's chocolate, verifying your theory. Von Karma is angry with Badd for allowing you to investigate, and removes him from the case. He now wants you to prove that he never found Dover's body. You haven't got any evidence, so he leaves, saying that the matter will be settled in the courtroom. Edgeworth has one final request to make of Badd, which he says will be his "trump card" in the trial. Gregory Edgeworth promises to defeat von Karma in court, and bring the truth to light...
