As one can see from the map below, many earthquake-prone areas are densely populated, e.g. Java, Japan, eastern US and New Zealandː

What are the factors that induce people to stay?

  • Opportunities are benefits brought by an area.
  • Risks encourage people to move away from an area.
  • They are also influenced by their own perceptions of hazards, their knowledge and experiences with the hazard, and attributes like age, sex, religious beliefs, traditional values, etc.
