HKDSE Geography/M7/Heat Island Effect

From Wikibooks, open books for an open world

Urban heat island refers to a higher mean air temperature in urban areas than rural areas. Urban heat effect is intensified in following ways

  • Blanket effect from pollutants and water vapour
  • Man-made heat from air-conditioners and transportations
  • Tall and dense buildings block airflow
  • Less vegetation leads to little evapotranspiration
