Introduction
[edit | edit source]The Nawabs of Bengal were a series of rulers who governed the region of Bengal and Orissa from the early 18th century (and Bihar from 1733 onwards) until the advent of the British East India Company, effectively taking control in the latter half of the century. The Nawabs declared independence from the weakened and hastily declining Mughal Empire in 1717. They administered and managed their realm under a spirit of independence which would later become distinguishable during the Conquest of Tripura, the Maratha invasions in Bengal and also during the Afghan Insurrections in Bengal. This book explores the rise, rule, and fall of the Nawabs, focusing on key figures such as Siraj-ud-Daula, Alivardi Khan and Murshid Quli Khan.
