History
[edit | edit source]The PlayStation Classic was launched on December 3rd, 2018 for $99.99.[1][2] Though it was themed around the widely popular original PlayStation, the system received a mixed reception, partly due to shipping with an inconsistent mix of NTSC and PAL games.[3][4] Later the price of the system would fall to $60.[5] By July 2019 the price of the console had fallen to $29.99.[5]
By 2021 third parties would release game packs for the system.[6]
Technology
[edit | edit source]Like most retro revival consoles from this era, the PlayStation Classic uses software emulation to achieve compatibility with the original PlayStation, and as a result has a much different, much more advanced internal technical architecture.
The PlayStation Classic is powered by a MediaTek MT8167 SOC with a quad core ARM Cortex-A35 CPU clocked at 1.5 gigahertz and PowerVR GE8300 GPU. The system has 1 gigabyte of DDR3 clocked at 1866 megahertz.
For internal storage the system has 16 gigabytes of eMMC 5.1 flash. Unlike the original PlayStation, the PlayStation Classic lacks a CD drive.[7]
The PCSX ReARMed emulator is used for emulation of original PlayStation games on the PlayStation Classic.
Controllers connect to the system over standard USB ports.[8]
