The pharynx occurs at the back of the mouth cavity and is the area where the nasal passages and the alimentary tract cross each other. It moves food from the mouth to the esophagus. As the pharynx also serves the respiratory system,it also leads to the trachea by means of an opening called glottis. When food is swallowed the glottis is closed by means of a leaf shaped cartilage called epiglottis.
