International Postage Meter Stamp Catalog/Egypt
Egypt
[edit | edit source]- Egypt was one of the earliest countries to use a postage meter. For a short period in 1922 a Moss (New Zealand) machine was used by the National Bank of Egypt in Cairo. Postage meters were not used again until 1933.
- All stamps are inscribed “EGYPT”, “EGYPTE”, “ARE”, “RAE”, “RAU”, “UAR”, or have Arabic script without Western inscription. Few stamps have a meter number (M#) but many have a License number (L#), in Arabic.
- Although manufactured in Germany, the Nessim machine (Type PV1) was invented and used only in Egypt.
- The stamps are grouped according to political period and inscription.
- A - Kingdom of Egypt, 1922 – 1953
- B - Republic of Egypt, 1953 – 1958
- C - United Arab Republic, 1958 – 1971
- D - Arab Republic of Egypt, 1971 – present
- Many Egyptian meter stamps have doubled value figures, with Arabic over Western numerals (technically Eastern Arabic over Western Arabic). This catalog represents the Arabic zero as “
“.
GROUP A: Kingdom of Egypt, 1922–1952
[edit | edit source]- All franks, except Type A1, have a crown and Arabic tougra (monogram) in the design. Two tougras exist, one for King Fuad (1917-1936) and one for King Farouk (1936-1952) as follows:

[edit | edit source]- Most franks have Western inscriptions “UAR EGYPTE”, “UAR EGYPT”, “RAU EGYPTE”, “RAU” alone, or “UAR” alone. Some have Arabic inscription only without Western characters.
- One stamp, C2.5, does not have a country name in either script. Possibly this is from a damaged die.
- NOTE: Group B stamps are often found used after 1958 into the UAR period.

By the beginning of the Arab Republic of Egypt period, Pitney Bowes had become the owner of Universal Postal Frankers. Stamps from the “Multi Value” and “Automax” models became virtually indistinguishable. Types DA3.1 through DA3.6 could be from either the “Automax” or the “Multi Value” machines. All have a 5-pointed asterisk in the value figures, and all have double-circle town marks.
