Unresolved Issues

[edit | edit source]

Kana Stroke Order

[edit | edit source]

Our kanji reference should show stroke order. Some possibilities for how to do it are:

  • Using GIMP to add arrows
  • Animated GIFs using AdGif or Adobe ImageReady (both non-free software) like so:
  • Animated GIFs using http://www.gifworks.com gifworks (free software)
  • Use the GIMP-GAP (???)
  • Writing a description, including pointing out common mistakes
  • ImageMagick's animate tool. (Free software)
I found commons:Category:Chinese stroke order. There're already plenty of images and seems to be counting. - marsian 10:24, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

Soundfiles on Kana

[edit | edit source]

Tomos has been so kind as to offer to record soundfiles for us. I asked him to record clips for the kana so far, but he is eager to do aditional recording as well. Put on your thinking caps for good ways to apply this valuable new resource we have. Check the mailinglist for the details of his offer. GoodStuff 06:56, 22 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I'm working. - marsian 10:24, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

Conventions

[edit | edit source]

Conventions already decided

[edit | edit source]

Conventions still to be decided

[edit | edit source]
  1. nomenclature for parts of speech
  2. how to teach particles, particularly wa, ga
  3. how to teach pronouns
    • Do we call them pronouns / demonstrative words, or do we just call them nouns and say that Japanese has no true pronouns?
  4. how to teach inflection of doushi, keiyoushi, and keiyoudoushi
  5. The issue of whether to include a notation for pitch accent was raised. The consensus was to defer adding pitch accent until at least the intermediate course as it is not necessary for comprehension and can be overwhelming to the first-time learner. Specific proposed notations include:
    • o-san (this can't indicate falling pitch after the last syllable)
    • o-tóusàn (this can only be used with romaji)
    • は「な」す
    • おとこ\, か\ぞく
    • indicating tone with color
    • Others: [1]

IE crash

[edit | edit source]

The Japanese module crashes with Internet Explorer when you scroll. This happens with all versions from 02:33, 7 February 2006 on, the last (or first?)crashing IE even without scrolling. Yes, that's Microsoft's fault. Anyway, the page could contain incorrect code (either directly or generated by Mediawiki).

A workaround for others experiencing this problem:

Go to the history page and compare the current version with the version from 02:33, 7 February 2006. Scrolling should work now.

Hmm... Now I confirmed the phenomenon once, with IE @ Windows XP: at first I could open the page and scrolling was also ok, but when I pressed "reload" button, it crashed. However, after that it won't crash again, whatever I did. Probably something worng with my edit, but... what? All right, I reverted it to the revesion as of 2006-02-07. After all, being able to view contents is much more important than good looking. Is is okay now? - marsian 17:11, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Yes, works fine now. I'll check after the next IE update.
Thanks. Sorry for the inconvenience I've caused you. - marsian 10:24, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
Not your fault. Thanks for the Japanese pages :)
Ruby characters in boxes (tables) cause IE to crash. avoid.

Whatever the cause, it now works with IE. (Version 2006-02-07 and later)
