Plant Sciences/Arabidopsis root development/Pericycle

From Wikibooks, open books for an open world

Pericycle is located between the vascular tissues and the endodermis. It is involved in loading/unloading of vasculature (ref ??).

This tissue has two subpopulation of cells:

  • cells in front of xylem poles (also called Pericycle Founder Cells, PFCs) are blocked in G2 phase and are able to reenter the cell cycle to initiate lateral roots (Beeckman et al 2001). This tissue is therefore considered as an "extended meristem".
  • cells in front of phloem poles are not able to initiate lateral roots.
