Why is English similar to Portuguese
[edit | edit source]Due to the Norman conquest of England starting in 1066, the old English language was over the period a few hundred years creolized approximately 30% with French words, 30% with Latin words (Italian/Spanish/Portuguese) to form a new language called Middle English. For this reason English speakers today will find many of the words of Portuguese familiar and cognate with English words Having similar meanings.
