Catalpa species

[edit | edit source]

Three Catalpa species have naturalized in New York State:

  • Catalpa ovata (Chinese or yellow catalpa), native to parts of China.
  • Catalpa speciosa (northern or hardy catalpa), native to IL, IN, MO, KY, AR, TN,
  • Catalpa bignonioides (southern or common catalpa), native to MS, AL, GA, FL,

Chinese catalpa and northern catalpa are currently listed as Tier 4 invasives within the Finger Lakes PRISM, though their Invasiveness Ranks have not been assessed for the state. Southern catalpa has primarily naturalized in the southeastern part of New York and has not been assigned a tier number by any New York PRISM.[1]
