Introduction
It has been said that the tower in the center of the World is connected to Paradise. Dreaming of a life in Paradise, many have challenged the secret of the tower, but no one knows what became of them. Now, there is another who will brave the adventure...—Taken from the game
The Final Fantasy Legend is a unique roleplaying game for the classic Game Boy. It is actually the first part of Squaresoft's experimental series of SaGa games. This series is known for its use of unconventional gameplay, making it an interesting RPG historically.
The story, although not the focus of the game, tells the tale of an adventurer braving the trials of a tower that supposedly leads to Paradise. This adventure will take him, her, or it through multiple worlds chock full of adventure and 8-bit roleplaying gameplay.
The game was originally released on the Game Boy, and has since been re-released on the WonderSwan Color, Mobile Phone platforms (i-Mode, EZweb, and SoftBank 3G), and the Nintendo Switch.
Gameplay
Being a SaGa game, the gameplay is a bit unconventional, noticeably in the battle system, items, and in 'leveling up'. These are the key differences from a typical RPG.
- Items break after a certain number of uses.
- Characters level up in different ways depending on their type.
Both of these affect battles.
In other respects, the gameplay is just like any other RPG from the era. Characters walk around in an overhead perspective, battles are random, stores sell you items for gold, and characters can heal their wounds at inns.
Character Types
Perhaps what differentiates Final Fantasy Legend the most from its brethren is the unique character types, humans, mutants, and monsters.
Humans
[edit | edit source]Humans, with their ability to carry eight items at a time, can be very useful. At the beginning of the game, are much stronger than mutants and some monsters. They level up by purchasing various potions such as STRONG, AGILITY, and HP200. These potions increase, respectively, the Strength, Agility, and HP(up to 200 points) of the humans that drink them. The HP of humans can further be raised by potions such as HP400.
Monsters
[edit | edit source]Otherwise uninteresting, monster characters have the ability to eat the meat of defeated enemies, possibly mutating them into another monster type (a double-edged sword, as mutations are not always beneficial).
