How do I determine the max range ?
- Fully charge the van.
- Decide on a reasonably cruising speed (slower = longer range, I used 40 mph).
- Then find a circuit (so the hills even out) e.g. about 10 miles.
- Clear the trip counter and note the energy remaining.
- Drive around the circuit and repeat the circuit until you cant do another circuit but can still get home. At each 10% point note the current mileage. Use minimum throttle all the time (best to keep in the green if you can).
How do I drive near the range limit ?
- Make sure that you can actually achieve the range that you want from spreadsheet calculated from "Determining the max range" above. (Note that rain reduce your range by 10-15%)
- Plan your route and calculate the expected remaining charge at regular points on the trip (e.g. village1 is 5 miles away which will use 10% so 90% should be remaining).
- Start off with the derived estimated speed. At each point change your average speed (if required) dependent on the following
- you have used more that the estimated energy then you need to slow down (e.g. by 5 mph)
- you have used about the correct amount then keep going at that average speed.
- you have used less than the estimate energy, then only if you are in a hurry you can pick a little on the speed (e.g. by 5 mph)
- This process will take account of all the factors that can affect your range, e.g.
- rain
- speed
- wind
- rolling resistance
