About Me

I am a long-time ODU Biology major who just decided to add teaching to my list of career options. I have had many jobs including Lifeguard, Aquatics Director, Retail Manager, Bartender, Catering Manager, and most recently Internet Sales or Business Development Team member. Whew! Unfortunately, I have never been able to work within the Biology field. I hope that having the Teacher License will open a new door for me and finally allow me to practice what I love...even if the pay isn't great.

I live in Portsmouth with my husband and our two West Highland White Terriers, Sophie and Lucy Liu. Our family has a vacation home in Hatteras, North Carolinathat I visit as often as possible. My favorite past times are watching "the Office," "Bridget Jones' Diary," and Redskins Football, listening to my iPod while pretending to work on my fitness, playing Wii, and procrastinating on the beach. I consider myself a connoisseur of almost fancy foods and drinks. Dirty Martinis are my weakness!

My Philosophy on Teaching

Wow, lately, my whole outlook on teaching and education has really taken a turn. I am ten years out of high school where nothing was as it is now. Throughout my college career, I have had both effective and ineffective teachers. I guess my philosophy on teaching is that it is important to not only spew information and expect others to magically understand, but instead to take the time and paths to best impart different aspects of said knowledge in an understandable language and interesting outlets to the hopeful learners. I know that sounds wordy, but it is hard to pinpoint a philosophy that covers all types of teaching.

My Hopes for This Course

I have been raised in a family of teachers who taught me everything except how to teach. I want to learn the ins and outs of being a teacher, not just how to mimic those I have observed in the past. I hope to finish the course with a greater understanding of a teacher's "job" and to decide whether teaching is the path for me. Kjone555 (talk) 02:51, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
