From Wikibooks, open books for an open world

Announcement of Discovery Gary Vey

An ancient alphabet has been found and successfully translated on six continents. Translations and grammar suggest a global human culture thrived in antiquity.

Note: Viewzone has recently published a book, Evil Fire Made To Burn, which is available at www.dandelionbooks.net and which gives new details and complete translations of this material, as well as other interesting facts surrounding the old language.

Abstract

The author, in attempting to document some unusual and very old rock art in remote North America, has discovered an ancient alphabet. This alphabet is similar to ancient writing found in other locations around the globe and the author suggests that this is the result of a cultural migration. The Colorado site, located near La Junta, has been dated to before 800 BC. In the Negev desert of Israel, the same alphabet has been meticulously dated to 1500 BC. In South Australia the alphabet is estimated to be over 5000 years old. Similar alphabets have been discovered in Oklahoma, Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and in Western Asia.

The alphabet has been given the name "old Negev," after the location of the alphabet's initial discovery in the Sinai by a Harvard funded expedition (see James Harris, Ph.D., Brigham Young University). In Australia it has been known by the name "Panaramitee Art." In the Americas it has been misrepresented as Native American Indian sign language (See LaVan Martineau, The Rocks Speak). The alphabet has most recently surfaced in Yemen, where it was carved in a beautiful font style associated with the Sabaean Empire under Bilqis, the Queen of Sheba. The alphabet is now understood to be proto-Himyaritic, or Sabaean, and has successfully been translated using the port-Canaanite algorithm.

The author recognizes the danger of describing the language as "old Negev" or "old Hebrew," despite the fact that root-Semetic languages are used in the translations. Evidence of the antiquity of this script in both the Americas and Australia suggest that this root language may pre-date that of the Hebrews by at least a millennia. The author and his associates suggest using an unbiased name, such as "the First Tongue," to avoid any biased association with a specific people, culture or era. The content of the translations, although not complete, suggests a global culture and religious belief system devoted to a monotheistic deity, often symbolized by the word "AL" or "EL." But more scrutiny of this language system, its content and occurrence around the globe is indicated.

Photographic evidence is presented here and on-going translations are posted from the ViewZone Expedition in May 2000 which returned to Colorado and Oklahoma and also the Yemen Expedition of 2001. A discussion of the evidence is welcomed.

A helpful summary of background data is presented HERE beginning with the first publication of the petroglyphs in 1998 on viewzone.com.

THE ALPHABET

Summarized Links by Topic and Region

The Alphabet contains basic, distinct geometric shapes that correspond to established phonetic sounds. Certain letters have more than one symbol so that they can be used consecutively with either inclusion or exclusion of the corresponding word. Since there are no word breaks (spaces) in this language, this is a natural requirement.

The vowels (except for Y) are almost always omitted, unless they are necessary to distinguish precise meaning. Most words have one sylible.

Earlier attempts to translate the symbols failed because the alphabet was believed to be proto-Arabic. This was a natural assumption since the symbols were first seen only in the Sinai and the Arabian peninsula. However, translations have successfully been made by using an old Semitic dialect that ore-dates Hebrew.

The alphabetical symbols were originally found pecked in stone. The stone surface is typically flat and has a dark patina of oxidized minerals, similar to a blackboard. The surface is breached with a sharp object, removing small chunks of the patina and revealing the bright contrasted stone. The bright petroglyphs gradually darken with age making them visible only with oblique lighting and shadows. An exception to this was the discovery of the Sabaean font in Yemen, which utilized the finest masonry and carving techniques. The Yemen text was also found cast in bronze and printed with movable typographic characters.

The alphabetic symbols are often arranged in groups that can be mistaken for pictures or maps. These "ligatures" can be broken down into discrete letters and phrases. Curiously, many of the ligatures are made such that the word meaning is conveyed both phonetically (for those that can read) and symbolically. A typical word or phrase will have two or three symbols in length. The direction of flow and the grammar are explained in detail in subsequent papers linked from this page.

BACKGROUND DATA

The Expedition 1998 was undertaken as a way of becoming familiar with petroglyphs. The four-corners area of Monument Valley was documented, as well as Anasazi habitats never before filmed. Special attention was given to the nature and style of the petroglyphs and pictograms (painted on rock) of that area.

An attempt is made to translate some of the symbols using the methods of LaVan Martineau, with limited success.

The Four-Corners, Anasazi Habitat (1998)

The Expedition visited the Hopi Reservation and was allowed to document ancient petroglyphs, never before photographed, and to explore the mythology and tradition of the oldest North American habitat. The Hopi Reservation (1998)

All of the visits to known American Indian sites were in preparation for assessing the southeast Colorado petroglyphs, which were meticulously documented in the feature, "The Picketwire People," shown for the first time on ViewZone Magazine in 1998. At the time, no similar alphabet was known to the author. The Picketwire People (1998)

PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE COLORADO, USA

We revisited the Colorado location again in May of 2000 and May 2002 with a higher resolution imaging and recording apparatus and documented many new sites. The most impressive was named "the Gillespie Stone" and contained an altar stone with appropriate texts praising the One God, "El." (see The Colorado Expedition of 2000 and Colorado Expedition 2002).

Other Atrifacts recently translated reveal the manner in which the alphabet is grouped and can easily be mistaken for a picture.

These OKLAHOMA translations were made after discovering an old photograph taken of a remote site in Colorado. The black and white original is in a museum, largely forgotten.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA Most recently, Viewzone received photographs from a team in Australia who depicted similar petroglyphs of a much older date (i.e. in excess of 1800 B.C.) These were examined and translations of the material proved that it originated with the same root culture and ascribed to the same rules of grammar and symbols.

Translation of these Australian panels, a style known locally as Panaramitee Tradition, has been completed but the complete and the results have been successful. We provide some examples here.

NEGEV DESERT, ISRAEL The Negev Desert has been explored by Dr. James Harris, of BYU, who identified some of the grammar and structure of the Middle-East petroglyphs and has described this alphabet as "old Negev." His translations are reviewed in detail.

Additional script from the Negev region are also included for review.

Update from Yemen: Translations.

On October 15, John McGovern, busy documenting the First Tongue in Australia, located pictures of inscriptions from the alleged Queen Sheba's archaeological site in Yemen. The language on the wall, although stylized into a font, appears to be First Tongue. Click HERE to see a recently uncovered panel and our attempt at a meaningful translation. Additional translations of a stone, partially buried in the sand and unexcavated, are attempted HERE.

It is our belief that this ancient alphabet was used much as Latin inscriptions and Roman Numeral dates are used on contemporary dedication plaques. A dead language never changes and is therefore constant through time.

Old temple uncovers Queen of Sheba

The Mahram Bilqis contains priceless documents, artifacts from the time of the biblical queen.

September 13, 2000 TORONTO (Reuters)

A Canadian archaeologist said on Tuesday that his team was slowly unravelling the secrets of a 3,000-year-old temple that may have belonged to the Queen of Sheba. Half-buried under the sands of the southern Arabian desert in northern Yemen, the Mahram Bilqis or Temple of the Moon God contains priceless documents and artifacts from the time of the biblical queen.

The Yemeni government does not have control over the various tribal groups that live in the country and who believe that they own the land'The temple was a sacred site for pilgrims in Arabia from around 1200 BC to to 550 AD, the time that fits with history's record of the Queen of Sheba and her visit to King Solomon of Israel. "To have such historical, religious and cultural connection to one site is tremendous. Not often in archaeology do we have that." Professor Bill Glanzman the project's director told Reuters. The discovery and excavation of the temple began in 1951 by the late American archaeologist Wendell Phillips. But it was halted abruptly a year later because of political unrest. Work was restarted in 1998 by the American Foundation for the Study of Man, a nonprofit organisation that spearheads such projects.

Surprisingly, Phillips and Jamme, in the 1950's, remarked that some of the oldest scripts in Yemen seemed to have proto-Canaanite characteristics and did not translate using Arabic dialects. The team were ousted from Yemen before this could be explored. Curiously, none of the subsequent research -- including the present work at the Temple Bilquis -- has attempted to apply this method to the texts.

Glanzman, leader of the recent University of Calgary expedition to Yemen, said the Bilquis Temple could become an "eighth wonder of the world," attracting people from around the world. But another expert disagrees. "This is the most optimistic of statements at the moment, given the economic and political situation and the problem of raising money for such things," said Edward Keall, senior curator of Middle Eastern Archaeology at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto.

"I do not expect to see it in my lifetime," he said. "As of the moment, the Yemeni government does not have control over the various tribal groups that live in the country and who believe that they own the land," Keall said. But Glanzman tries to sell the importance of the excavation, saying it is as important a discovery as the ruins of Pompeii, the pyramids of Giza or the Acropolis. "The sanctuary is packed with artifacts, pottery, artwork and inscriptions, opening a new door to the ancient civilisations of southern Arabia," he said. Glanzman said his team could be finished with the excavation within 15 years.

Discovery of Writing in Oklahoma, U.S.A.

This is a portion of the long petroglyph mural that was discovered just to the South of the Purgatory River in Colorado. The petroglyph was chalked by professor Weisendanger and his associates from Tulsa University in the 1940s, and then photographed in black and white from a large negative. The only surviving print is in the "No Man's Land Museum" in Goodwell, Oklahoma, pictured at the bottom of this page.

This section represents about five feet of a carefully executed narrative, reading from right to left, which runs about 80 feet in total length. Areas of the petroglyph were worn with age and water erosion and were not chalked. But what is enhanced is clear enough to translate, and the results are reproduced here for scrutiny.

One of the many curious observations that we have been able to make concerns the arrangement of multiple concentric circles. At first, we did not imagine these as ligatures. The arrangement has been shown to result in meaningful translations when taken as a double-Tsadeh ligature. Some examples of the concentric circle ligatures can be seen in these petroglyphs.

NTN = "give, allow, let..." (A)YL ="...the leader, ram..." L[horizontal]= preposition "to, for, of, from..." AR = "...light..." LN ="...to pray..."

The last LN segment appears to be part of a longer ligature; however, a section of uncarved rock breaks this ligature from the adjoining one while maintaining an illusion of design continuity.

BY = "...entreating, invoking..." AL ="EL (God)" SLS = "...the serpent..." LR ="to be attentive, to take notice..." L[horizontal]= preposition "to, for, of, from..." SN ="tongue, language..." V ="and" TsTs ="to appear, blossom, emerge..."

This could possibly be a reference or prohibition against using the name of the God, "El" or "Yah," in vain because it also allows the "serpent" to be invoked. More translations of the wall could provide some further explanation.

Yemen: Sabaean Culture & History Links to Information & Resources Yemeni Script Translator - this has replaced the standard "old Negev" characters with a photograph of the actual letters as they appear in the artifacts at Bilqis. It is suggested that you attempt words of two and sometimes three letters, as this is the common format. Also, remember you will be reading the characters from right to left. Yemen and Sabean Culture & Language

    • 20** Semitic Languages.. Many scholars believe that about 1000 BC four branches developed from the original Semitic alphabet: South Semitic, Canaanite, Aramaic, and Greek. (Other scholars, however, believe that South Semitic developed independently from North Semitic or that both developed from a common ancestor.) The South Semitic branch was the ancestor of the alphabets of extinct languages used in the Arabian Peninsula and in the modern languages of Ethiopia. Canaanite was subdivided into Early Hebrew and Phoenician, and the extremely important Aramaic branch became the basis of Semitic and non-Semitic scripts throughout western Asia. The non-Semitic group was the basis of the alphabets of nearly all Indian scripts; the Semitic subbranch includes Square Hebrew, which superseded Early Hebrew to become the prototype of the recently constructed Hebrew writing. Semitic Languages comprise one of the five subfamilies or branches of the Hamito-Semitic or Afro-Asiatic language family. Of the Semitic languages, Arabic was carried beyond its original home in the Arabian Peninsula and spread throughout the Arabian Empire and is spoken across North Africa to the Atlantic coast. Arabic is used by Muslim, Christian, and Jewish Arabs. The other Semitic languages are centered in a region bounded on the west by Ethiopia and on the north by Syria and extending southeast through Iraq and the Arab Peninsula, with some slands?of Semitic speech farther east in Iran. The Yemen Museum in Sana'a displays this stone. Ironically, it lists prophecies and prerequisited for the time to open the buried chamber, containing the "cabinet of El" and, presumably, the self-sacrificed son of Saba and Solomon, Menelik.

This stone was photographed as it is displayed in a prominent museum -- upside down -- with no idea of its translation or alphabet. A similar alphabet later developed in Ethiopia but misread many of the ligatures as letters and replaced many sound values with new sounds to accommodate an Arabic dialect. This is still in limited use today while this older form is used exclusively for religious and official writing. The Ethiopic script translates using Arabic dialects instead of Semitic. Using the First Tongue, Semitic root language and symbols, we can arrive at a somewhat fluid and lucid translation with some historical flavor.

The stone has been trimmed on both ends and notched in the center and appears to have been used as a building stone subsequent to its creation as part of a significant narrative mural. The resulting translation lacks these additional symbols making a precise translation impossible.

We hesitate to use the term "Semitic" because it really does not represent the root language that eventually evolved into what is commonly known as Semitic. We choose to call this "First Tongue" since it has been found in Australia, Chile and the United States with dates as old as 8000 BCE! The use of this script and dialect on this important construction appears to resonate with the contemporary use of Latin, Greek and other "dead languages" on public buildings, currency and official insignias.

Anyone who scrutinizes our work as it is presented here will acknowledge the intent of these inscriptions. We have intentionally been inexplicit in these details. Please review the on-going work in the links provided below.

The Inscriptions from Bilqis (Yemen) according to Dr. Jamme in 1962

Above is the first of many illustrations of the exterior wall of the Temple of Sheba, taken from W. F. Jamme's book, Sabaean Inscriptions from Mahram Bilqis (Marib), (1962). Most of the artifacts were photographed by Jamme himself and were gathered under restrictive circumstances owing to the territorial disputes that still continue in Yemen.

Jamme's methodology of transliteration is of interest to us because we have translated a small portion of these artifacts with an entirely different algorithm. We will attempt to show the difference in these two approaches.

We have determined the sound values for an assortment of letters based in the work of Dr. James Harris (BYU), who successfully translated numerous scripts in the Negev desert. Earlier forms of this script have also been found as far back as 8,000 years ago, which demonstrate the consistency of grammar and dialect. This discovery was not made when Jamme attempted his translations in 1962. He therefore relied on the Ethiopian sound values. Some sound values required for Arabic dialects are different from the proto-Semitic language that we believe was used when the older artifacts were made. Various letters in the relatively newer Ethiopian alphabet, which were Jamme's only resource, have been re-assigned to Arabic phonetics. But there are other errors as well.

The early language used characters called "ligatures" (a group of letters which are graphically combined to represent a more compact and unified shape). In the artifacts that we reviewed from Bilqis, we noted ligatures for such words as "EL" (the Lord), "BN" (the Son), "BL" (life, love), "TseL" (protection), while these ligatures have been assigned the status of single letter sounds in the Ethiopian version.

The artifacts pictured above attest to the use of ligatures in the older language. This "anomaly" on the left is the ligature for AT "chamber, cabinet, box, cell..." as in the Ark of the Covenant. Note that it appears to be immediately followed (to its left) by a ligature for EL "the Lord." In many instances the ligatures were used when the referenced word was repeated within the text or if it previously made reference to a person.

Jamme's methodology did not recognize the lamed as a vertical line and instead considered this line to indicate word or phrase breaks, as we would use punctuation. According to Jamme's tables, the gimmel of the older language is read as a lamed. Jamme also interprets the ligatures for "EL" to have the sound value of qof, and attributes an "S" sound to the ligature for "BN" and "BL."

It is then not too surprising that Jamme's results consist largely of complex personal names and alleged genealogies. He also reads the script from left-to-right, even when the "fonts" are reversed. It was the practice to alternate the direction in multi-lined texts so that the reader could scan the text in a zig-zag pattern. Confusion was avoided by writing the letters backwards on alternate lines. Jamme seems to have ignored this phenomenon. One can see the "Mem" and "Resh" to quickly determine the correct flow. By reading from left-to-right, Jamme was fortunate at least half of the time, but without using the correct sound values his translations are mundane at best.

Our methodology reads the script from right-to-left and alternates as the letters are mirrored. This provides a relatively smooth and meaningful translation without constant mention of personal names or tribes. The vertical line in our interpretation is a lamed and we recognize the word or phrase breaks as being marked by the vav, which resembles a dissected circle or can be two adjacent circles. This translates as "but, and, also..." and makes for some long run-on phrases that would enrage a modern editor.

The writers were careful to repeat their phrases and to use multiple ligatures to assist in the deciphering of these strings of letters. Since most words are devoid of vowels (except if the vowel falls outside of the last consonant) there are typically two letters to a word. Where there could be some ambiguity with similar adjacent letters, alternate forms of the letters will be used to denote word breaks. An example would be "the chamber underneath" AT-TT. This would be written similar to AtTT to allow the reader to see that the break is between the two forms of the letter. Otherwise this string of letters could possibly be interpreted as "the signal" ATT-T.

We have identified alternate forms for bet, chet, dalet, and tav in the Bilqis alphabet. The older examples of this script also employ alternates for peh, mem, nun, tsadeh and zayin. In addition, the script in North America and the Negev has used rotation of letters and repetition of the final consonant to to indicate phrase breaks. Undoubtedly some of the material at Bilqis was produced in the last two millennia and utilize the Ethiopian variant. This older language was buried, literally, and disappeared for almost 800 years, before emerging in Ethiopia with a new dialect and quickly spread back to Yemen. Our translations seem to state that this dormant interval was the result of events surrounding the only son of Queen Saba (Queen Sheba), Menelik, whose mother had her former palace and temple buried to prevent its destruction and pillage by invading nations (see transliteration below).

What has been translated thus far?

Using the algorithm that has been successful in translating numerous examples of this script from around the world, we have obtained the following information, quoted here from a letter sent to His Eminence, Abdulla Salleh, President of The Republic of Yemem.

Menelek (spelled MNLCC), the only son of Queen Saba (Queen Sheba) and Solomon, was depressed when he learned that his father's kingdom had been overcome and the Temple in Jerusalem was sacked. His grief was deep ("The happiness of the Son was poisoned...") and this worried his mother. Shortly after this invasion of Jerusalem, Menelik received word that the Ark of the Covenant (the "cell of the Lord" AT-EL), formerly housed in Solomon's Temple, was relocated to what is now Yemen and was in the protection of Menelik. The text refers to an "oath" that was taken by Menelik to protect the Ark, perhaps agreed upon when he visited Solomon several years earlier. Menelik also received a warning from Nathan, Menelik's half-brother, that the Ark could be harmful to his health and that it had caused vision problems and "trembling" (seizures?)when Nathan had attempted to interact with it. Menelik, however, had none of these adverse reactions and eagerly interacted with this object, constructing a special chamber underground in which he stored the Ark and conversed through it with the Lord. As the danger of invading neighbors became real for the kingdom of Saba, Menelik announced that the Ark had instructed him to enter the underground chamber with the Ark, and to have the entire construction covered with sand to conceal it and protect it from hostile forces. Menelik informed his mother, Queen Saba, that he would remain buried with the Ark for a long period of time.

Following her only son's instructions, Menelik was buried with the Ark. However, his mother had a chamber constructed adjacent to the Ark chamber and had a secret peephole ("...aperature...") installed so that she could monitor his condition while he was buried. She secretly planned to open the chamber and rescue her son should he be in peril. On many occasions, Queen Saba viewed her son inside the chamber and, on one occasion, noted that he was receiving a revelation of the future from the Ark, which made a sound like thunder. As she watched Menelik interact with the Ark, she noted that he trembled and shook from the visions that were being shown to him.

As time passed, the thundering noise and movement of her son ceased. On one occasion the Queen noted that a worm crawled out from the peephole. This suggested that Menelik had died. The Queen was determined to open the chamber and rescue her son but she recalled her promise to him and remembered his words, stating that he would be buried for "a long time." She wept ("...cried an ocean of tears...") that his vision of the future also included the realization that she had doubted his word and she prayed that he would forgive her for her doubts.

Determined to honor her son's wishes, Queen Saba had the chamber reinforced with stone and consulted with the builders and masons to design an enclosure that would protect the buried chamber from future earthquakes, floods, and other natural phenomenon. The chamber was thus made more sturdy and a large dam was constructed around the buried chamber to protect it from water and floods.

In the Yemen museum there is another stone which dictates the conditions that should exist prior to any attempt at opening the chamber. These include the occupation of the land by a "friendly" nation and the warning that the Ark must not be moved and should not be used for any national or personal benefit. The Ark is to be used for the benefit of mankind and petitions to the Lord are to be made by collective prayer in the area of the buried Chamber and through the "priest" of the Ark (Menelik?).

Following the burial of the chamber and the surrounding temple, Queen Saba "dimmed her kingdom" and moved to Ethiopia with the prohibition that the area where the Ark and Menelik were buried should be forgotten, lest future hostile nations and "blind prophets" should seek it out.

Additional translations are beginning to fill in the gaps of this remarkable story and we will present these as they are translated. .Gary Vey

The translation program is only as good as the data which is entered. The sequence of letters is not covered by any known convention, and therefore some interpretation of the pattern is needed. Most, but not all, Colorado petroglyphs are read from right-to-left. With a stacked ligature, bottom-to-top reading is usually associated with references to God, while the reverse is true for earthly matters. With experience, complex ligatures can be successfully broken down into their correct sequence and will result in accurate translations. Distinguishing between word groups was accomplished by repeating the last letter in a word or phrase. A double letter, therefore, is a helpful indicator of the sequence with which old Negev alphabetical letters should be read. This rule is also not adhered to completely and some scripts simply end with no duplicity.

The photograph above is of the most famous "old Negev" script found in North America. Heavily chalked and scrutinized by the likes of Barry Fell and other epigraphers, no logical translation has ever been made and published of this script. Until now.

We are using McGlone's own drawings of this panel and have duplicated this below to allow the script to be seen more clearly.

You will note that we have broken the script into word groups, starting from the right and working towards the left. Translations can be verified by using the on-line negev translation program. We will explain each section here.

Section 1 consists of a ligature formed by the letters Tsadeh and Lamed.

Tsel =shadow, shade, protection. Section 2 consists of a large Yod. This is interpreted as a shorthand for OY! or a sign of exclamation. Thus, the first word group is being emphasized (i.e. "Shade!") Section 3 begins with a horizontal Lamed. This indicates that the Lamed is to be read as a preposition "of, at, to, for..." The remaining ligature consists of a Khaf+two Lameds, followed by a large Yod. KLLY= for the public, general, commonplace person... Section 4 consists of two vertical Lameds.

LUL=were it not for... or because of... provided by... Section 5 shows a curved Resh followed by an extended ligature of Khaf plus Alef plus Lamed.

Rakka El = temple of El. Section 6 consists of a single Lamed, followed by two Nun.

Lina = lodgings or accommodations (literally, "stay the night!").

So far, this group of signs appears to be a sort of advertisement for staying, in effect, ...at the temple of "El" protection, shade and accommodations are provided to the general public... All of these translations were made by converting the "old Negev" symbols into their corresponding Hebrew sounds and then using a Hebrew to English lexicon which is encoded in the Negev translation program. Although the program is not entirely complete, most of the common words will be found if it is used correctly. Hopefully this will further the effort to gain acceptance by traditional historians by first gaining the support of non-scholastics who can translate these important links to our past with a minimum of bias.

Viewzone would like to hear from any attempts at translating in the field. We hope to share more detailed transcripts in the near future.
