National security is an issue in the 2004 election on several fronts: Australia's own borders, South-East Asia and the Middle East.
National security decisions are often, but not always, connected to the national interest.
The person who is responsible for taking National Security decisions is the Foreign Minister, with advice from the Prime Minister, public servants and diplomats who know the regions concerned well.
