Indefinite Article

  • There is no indefinite article in Welsh. afal - an apple; cath - a cat; merch - a girl.

The Definite Article

  • y - before consonants: y gath - the cat; y ci - the dog.
  • yr - before vowels and h (remember that w and y are vowels in Welsh): yr ysgol - the school; yr afal - the apple; yr het - the hat.
  • 'r - suffixed to the preceding word if it ends with a vowel regardless of whether the following word begins with a vowel or consonant: mae'r plant - the children are; mae'r ysgol - the school is; dyma'r llyfr - here's the book.
