United Nations Postal Administration
[edit | edit source]The United Nations (UN) is an international organization with its own postal administration.
in 1947 Argentina was the first to propose that the United Nations issue its own postage stamps. In 1951 the United Nations reached an agreement with the United States to issue stamps in U.S. currency for use only from the UN headquarters in New York. On October 24, 1951, United Nations Day, the first stamp was issued.
There are now three offices that issue stamps. New York began to issue stamps in 1951, followed by Geneva in 1969 using Swiss francs, and Vienna in 1979 using first Austrian schillings and later Euros.
The stamps issued by the UN promote the values of the organization, and so there is a strong preference for themes related to peace and development. Another strand is dedicated to flora and fauna, and natural beauty. Other subjects include space exploration, UNESCO world heritage, the family, discrimination, and road safety, among others.
