Usage note

[edit | edit source]

Hawaiians being American, not every Hawaiian will have a Hawaiian first name. Hawaiian first names often come from Western names (such as Kimo, from Jim), but others are from Hawaiian words (such as Hoku, meaning star). Some guides to Hawaiian names have "half-way" names, in between Hawaiianized and English, with Hawaiian vowel phonotactics but English consonants, such as "Babara" instead of "Papala" or "Barbara"; however, there is no evidence that any person ever actually bore these names. It should be noted that genuine Hawaiian names, such as Hoku, are unisex.

Hawaii is a great melting pot, and most people have an admixture of other ethnicities than Native Hawaiian, such as Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Portuguese, and the list goes on. Many Hawaiians have Native Hawaiian surnames, but Japanese surnames are the most common in Hawaii.
