Writing Adolescent Fiction/Character names/Kenyan, Tanzanian and Ugandan
Usage note
[edit | edit source]Swahili given names are used in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda alike. The Luo and Kikuyu first names are also used in Kenya for their respective tribes.
Luo have three names: their first name, a personal surname, and their father’s personal surname. Many Luo surnames vary with gender (O- for males, A- for females). A man would be Otieno while a woman would be Atieno.

Kikuyu girls’ names
[edit | edit source]In the Kikuyu tribe, the firstborn daughter receives the name of her paternal grandmother, and the second daughter the name of her maternal grandmother. If the parents have any more girls, they will name said girls after paternal aunts, alternating with maternal aunts. If they run out of aunts, they will do research and find more relatives.
