Writing Adolescent Fiction/Character names/Latin American Indian
Usage note
[edit | edit source]The native tribes of the America have been ravaged by the colonizing natives of Spain and Portugal, so a person with Aztec, Inca or Mayan ancestry may not have a first name from these civilizations. Likely they will use a Spanish first name. Similarly, the majority of people with Aztec ancestry will use a Spanish surname rather than a Nahuatl one. The Quechua and Mayans are more likely to keep indigenous surnames.
Some Brazilians who are not of Guarani descent will still have a Guarani first name.
