Receive the American Red Cross Level VII Advanced Skills or YMCA certificate or equivalent in Advanced Swimming OR pass the following requirements.

It is only fair to tell everyone that this honor is a little out of date, the American Red Cross no longer has 7 levels. There are now only 6 levels (multiple different sections to level 6 now)... So until they update this honor, it would most likely be advisable to do several sections of level 6. |
While it is not required that you have a professional teach you (or your kids) to swim, it is highly advisable. Check with your local pool (a local college, or YMCA for example) to see what kind of swimming courses are offered. If you are unsure where your nearest American Red Cross (ARC), or YMCA is, then check online at: Red Cross (in the middle near the top there is a place to enter your zip code so that you can locate your locale ARC chapter); or YMCA (there is a box off to the left that will allow you to enter your zip code). If you choose to not have a professional teach you, you will find the requirements below.
1. Swim a coordinated and effective stroke continuously for the following strokes and distances

[edit | edit source]b. Breastroke for 100 yards (91.4 meters)
[edit | edit source]c. Inverted breaststroke for 50 yards (45.7 meters)
[edit | edit source]d. Sidestroke for 100 yards 91.4 meters)
[edit | edit source]e. Overarm sidestroke for 100 yards (91.4 meters)
[edit | edit source]f. freestyle stroke for 50 yards (45.7 meters)
[edit | edit source]g. Back crawl for 100 yards (91.4 meters)
[edit | edit source]h. Crawl for 100 yards (91.4 meters)
[edit | edit source]2. Do the following dives in good form
[edit | edit source]a. Standing front dive
[edit | edit source]b. Running front dive
[edit | edit source]c. Pike surface dive
[edit | edit source]d. Tuck surface dive
[edit | edit source]3. Do a surface dive and swim underwater for ten yards.
[edit | edit source]4. Swim continuously for 30 minutes using one or more styles of swimming. Hanging onto the sides (resting) or touching the bottom with the feet is not permitted.
[edit | edit source]5. Know the causes and prevention of accidents that can occur in or near the water.
