Chaat masala, also spelled chat masala, is a type of South Asian spice mix. It can be made from scratch or purchased ready-made.

Characteristics

[edit | edit source]

One of the key ingredients in chaat masala is amchur, which provides its characteristic sour flavor.[1][2] Other typical ingredients to round out the flavor include asafoetida, black salt, chile powder, pepper, cumin, coriander, ginger, and ajwain.[1][2]

Selection and storage

[edit | edit source]

Like all spices, chaat masala is best when stored in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture. This will delay loss of flavor.

Chaat masala is primarily used in South Asian cuisines as a seasoning or garnish for chaat, fruit, salads, beverages, and snacks.[1][2][3][4]
