Sunflower seeds, sunflower kernels or sunflower hearts are the hulled fruit of the common sunflower (Helianthus annuus). The seeds sold for food usually have striped hulls.
They are available in the shell or hulled, raw (dried) or roasted. Roasted sunflower seeds may be plain or have salt or other flavorings added.
Sunflower seeds may be ground into sunflower butter and used as a substitute for peanut butter in settings where peanut allergies are an issue.
