Family Lycopodiaceae
[edit | edit source]The Lycopodiaceae (clubmoss family) can, for identification purposes in New York State, roughly be divided into clumping (firmoss) and creeping (clubmoss) groups.
|
Subfamily Huperzioideae
[edit | edit source]The Huperzioideae, known as firmosses, have also been treated as a separate family Huperziaceae. Firmosses differ from other Lycopodiaceae in that they grow in clumps, instead of producing creeping, horizontal stems like other family members.[1] Of the three genera in this group, Huperzia is a temperate and arctic genus and is the only one found naturally in New York. Of the other two genera, Phlegmariurus is native to tropical and subtropical regions, and Phylloglossum is native to Australia and New Zealand.
|
Huperzia
[edit | edit source]Commonly known as firmoss or fir-clubmoss, Huperzia (hoo-per-zee-uh) was named for Johann Peter Huperz, an early 19th century German botanist who specialized in ferns.
The rare Appalachian firmoss was published as Huperzia appalachiana in 1992, but authorities, including Weakly (2023)[1] consider it to be indistinct from the previously published Huperzia appressa. |

Dendrolycopodium
[edit | edit source] From Greek δενδρος (denros: tree), λυκος (lukos: wolf), and ποδιων (podion: legs), Dendrolycopodium (den-drō-lī-kə-ˈpō-dē-əm) contains tree-clubmoss species, which are fairly erect and have branched stems. This genus, also treated as Lycopodium sect. Obscura, is characterized by stalked terminal strobili, which contain their sporangia.
