What is the Master Quest?

[edit | edit source]

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest remixes the original dungeons present in Ocarina of Time and makes them much more difficult to complete. However outside of the dungeons nothing has changed, and many of the secrets and collectibles are in the same places they were in Ocarina of Time.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest was originally an expansion to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time planned for Nintendo's ill-fated Nintendo 64DD addon. When the 64DD failed in Japan, Nintendo cancelled the release of Master Quest. As time went on the nearly complete game sat wasted and unplayed. Nintendo decided to change this when they announced that they were bringing Ocarina of Time to the GameCube along with the legendary Master Quest, and would be offering both as part of a special pre-order campaign for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

In 2011, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time received a remake for the Nintendo 3DS titled The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. This game includes a version of Master Quest, titled The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D Master Quest, that features mirrored maps. This means that in the original Master Quest if the players were to turn left at a given spot, in 3D Master Quest they would turn right, and vice versa. To increase the challenge in this version, no enemy will drop hearts when defeated. Additionally all enemies deal twice as much damage to Link.

There are currently two ways to acquire this game.

  1. One is via the special pre-order disk for the Nintendo GameCube. Although the discs are clearly labeled as "not for resale" game retailers still regularly buy and sell used copies of the game.
  2. It is also available as an unlockable feature in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, where it can be unlocked upon completion of the original quest.
