Family Tropaeolaceae

[edit | edit source]
The Tropaeolaceae (nasturtium family) contains the single genus Tropaeolum, which in New York is represented by the cultivated ornamental commonly known as nasturtium. Note that this is not the same as the genus Nasturtium, commonly known as watercress, in the family Brassicaceae below.[1]

Berteroa
[edit | edit source]
Berteroa incana
Berteroa incana (hoary alyssum) is the only species of its genus listed as currently naturalized in North America north of Mexico according to Al-Shehbaz (2020) in the Flora of North America. Berteroa mutabilis was last collected in the early twentieth century from garden escapes in KS and MA, and Berteroa incana, collected from the Catskills, was misidentified as Berteroa obliqua.[1]

Tribe Iberideae

[edit | edit source]
The Brassicaceae tribe Iberideae contains the genera Iberis and Teesdalia, which together contain about four species that have been introduced to New York.[1]
Iberis
[edit | edit source]
Iberis sempervirens
A few non-native Iberis (candytuft) plants have been discovered in New York over the years but are not known to naturalize in the state.

The common name candytuft is derived from the Latin name Candia, which referred to the island of Crete or what is now Heraklion, its largest city.

Cakile
[edit | edit source]
Cakile edentula
The genus Cakile contains the only New York native in the tribe Brassiceae. The species Cakile edentula is native to coastal New York, with American sea rocket (Cakile edentula var. edentula) primarily on Atlantic coastal beaches and lake sea rocket (Cakile edentula var. lacustris) on Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. European sea-rocket has also been found near New York City beaches.
