Daphne

[edit | edit source]
Daphne mezereum
February daphne
The genus Daphne comprises nearly 100 accepted species worldwide, none of which are native to North America.[1]

Daphne mezereum has invaded moist forests in southern Ontario.[2]

All parts of Daphne mezereum are toxic if eaten, and contact with the sap can cause skin irritation.[3]

Family Cistaceae

[edit | edit source]
The Cistaceae (rock-rose family) in New York contains 4 genera with a total of 14 accepted taxa.[1]
  • Crocanthemum (frostweed) with 4 taxa,
  • Helianthemum (frostweed) with 1 taxon,
  • Hudsonia (goldenheather) with 2 taxa,
  • Lechea (pinweed) with 7 taxa.

Lechea

[edit | edit source]
Lechea intermedia
The genus Lechea is based primarily in eastern North America and contains about 18 species referred to as "pinweeds," of which seven sepecies (nine taxa) have been reported in New York. Most are low-growing herbs with narrow leaves and may small flowers that resemble pinheads.[1]

Linneaus named the genus Lechea for Swedish botanist Johan Leche (1704–1764), who taught in Finland and is regarded as the father of Finnish meteorology and space research, based on his documentation of the northern lights and early measurements of air temperature in collaboration with Anders Celsius.[2]

Helianthemum

Helianthemum salicifolium
Most New World Helianthemum species have now been segregated into Crocanthemum. The Old World Helianthemum do not seem to be found very often in the western hemisphere. Specimens of Helianthemum salicifolium were collected from the vicinity of the Yonkers Wool Mill in Westchester County in 1894.[1][2]

  1. NYFA did not originally list Hibiscus laevis, but USDA-NRCS shows it as native to eastern US and Ontario, with NY inside the northeast edge of the US range. It references a report in the 1991 Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club. A subsequent 2004 article in that Bulletin, The historical and extant vascular flora of Pelham Bay Park, Bronx County, New York 1947-1981 notes the 1991 discovery, but states that it was extirpaed the next year due to repeated mowing.
