Filipendula

[edit | edit source]
Filipendula rubra
Filipendula contains about ten Eurasian species and two North American species. Of these, one Midwestern and two Eurasian species have been found to have naturalized in New York.

Filipendula rubra (queen of the prairie) is the only North American native Filipendula found in New York State, where it is only known to be present in the wild as a garden escape.[1] It can be found on roadsides, ditches, thickets, and disturbed soils, but it has been less common than the Eurasian Filipendula ulmaria.[2]

Rubus subg. Chamaemorus

[edit | edit source]
Rubus chamaemorus
The native status of cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus) in New York could be subject to question. It is a circumboreal bramble, native to all provinces of Canada and present in the states of Alaska, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Maine. However, the only vouchered report of cloudberry growing outside of cultivation in New York was from Montauk in Suffolk County, Long Island in 1908.[1][2]

Rubus subg. Dalibarda

[edit | edit source]
Rubus repens
Dalibarda has been treated as a monospecific genus, but the Flora of North America Editorial Committee (2014)[1] treats it as a subgenus of Rubus. Its leaves superficially resemble those of violets, but its flowers and fruit are clearly rubusesque.

There continues to be disagreement about whether R. dalibarda or R. repens should be the accepted species name. Rubus repens was found to be invalid but has been proposed for conservation as the accepted name.[2]

Subgenus Dalibarda does appear to form a strongly-supported clade with the rest of Rubus and may nest within Rubus.[3]

Rubus laciniatus
Sect. Rubus contains somewhat invasive Old World species of Rubus subg. Rubus. The primary species of this section in New York State is Rubus laciniatus (cutleaf blackberry).

The rare-in-NY but possibly naturalizing and invasive Himalayan blackberry (Rubus bifrons and/or Rubus armeniacus), listed in the New York Flora Atlas only in Bronx and Staten Island (2008), are treated as a single species (R. bifrons) by the Flora of North America. However in Eurasia, they appear to be two distinct species. iNaturalist allows both species, following Kew's POWO, and both have a significant number of research-grade observations in North America.

Rubus caesius
Eurasian dewberry
The European dewberry has only been reported outside of cultivation in limited number of counties in North America, including only a few from New York. As of July 2015, it was not listed on New York State's Non-Native Plant Species Invasiveness Assessment.[1] However the Finger Lakes Native Plant Society,[2] Cornell Plantations, and Tompkins County[3] all list Rubus caesius as an invasive plant.

Tribe Colurieae

[edit | edit source]
Appalachian barren-strawberry
The New York members of the Colurieae tribe include about ten species of the genus Geum (avens) and a single species of Waldsteinia (barren-strawberry). Sources are mixed as to whether Waldsteinia should be placed under the Geum genus itself. In either case, the "barren strawberries" of this tribe are more closely related to the Geums than to the other New York strawberries (Fragaria) or mock-strawberries (Duchesnea), which are placed in the Potentilleae tribe below.

Protopopova (2022) concluded: Based on trnH-psbA plastid DNA analysis we believe that the taxonomic latter decision of combining Waldsteinia and Taihangia in one genus with Geum species does not reflect the complex structure of the obtained clade."[1]

Protopopova (2023) concluded: "Based on the present phylogenetic structure of Geum, Waldsteinia, and other closely related taxa, we believe that excluding Waldsteinia together with Coluria, Taihangia, and Oncostylus from Geum s.l. is more justified than ‘lumping’ them together into a single polymorphic genus."[2]

Waldsteinia

[edit | edit source]
Waldsteinia fragarioides
The type species of the genus Waldsteinia was found to be nested within Geum by J. E. E. Smedmark in 2006.[1]

Alan S. Weakley (2023) lists genus Waldsteinia as a "genus of about 7 species, perennial herbs, of disjunct areas in the Northern Hemisphere. Sometimes included in Geum. Protopopova, Pavlichenko, and Stepanov (2021) and Protopopova et al. (2023) supported its treatment as a genus separate from Geum."[2][3]
