Structural Biochemistry/Chromatography/Thin Layer (filter log)
Description
I was editing a wikibooks page on thin layer chromatography under the major headline of structural biochemistry. This contribution in which I was attempting to make was to include a little more information about the retardation factor between a solvent and a compound of interest in climbing up a silica based gel. This contribution also included a descriptive picture, as well as a formula in which to actually calculate the retardation factor.

Comments

It was the "retardation factor" that triggered the filter due to it trying to detect vandalism with the word "retard" in it. I've adjusted the filter so that it should not affect you again. I also added the text to the page you were attempting to add. Sorry for the inconvenience. – Adrignola talk 13:05, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've moved the page from your userspace into the book. I will look at the edit filter to check why it was triggered. Thanks. QU TalkQu 22:16, 3 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It was triggering because of the "[]" in the code, which was triggering the "test edit" filter, as the "[]" is a result of one of the buttons you see below the edit box. Sometimes vandals will go and try to edit a page and hit a bunch of the toolbar buttons. That filter was designed to catch that. I removed the portion of it that would look for the "[]" since I see it's used often in C++ code. – Adrignola talk 00:48, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Puredyne/SSH_into_your_Puredyne_system (filter log)
Description
Editing a page about using SSH connections, I added a simple SSH connection command, like this:
ssh live@192.168.1.74

Clearly that looks a bit like an email address, though it didn't occur to me until the filter shouted at me. I don't know if there's a way to distinguish this from email address entry, so I'm not sure it'll be possible to fix this false positive; but I'm reporting it FYI. Thanks.

Hmm... this would be tricky to distinguish from a email address, perhaps we can check to see if a line begins with 'ssh', 'scp', 'sftp', etc. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Thenub314 (talkcontribs) 18:15, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've tweaked the filter to be more like the link spam test and made it only add a tag for manual checking. --darklama 19:36, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please refrain from including in your edits. If you do not have an image available, there is no need for a placeholder. Additionally, I would suggest placing a link at Card Games/List following the same convention you see on the page already, making the content you wanted to add a "subpage" of the Card Games book. – Adrignola talk 23:33, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jeep Liberty/Performance (filter log)
Description
This is a discussion of performance enhancements available for the Jeep Liberty. The last sentence of the paragraph currently states that there is only one vendor of ECU flash updates for the Liberty Diesel. Having been investigating this update for my Liberty, I am aware of at least one other vendor of ECU flash updates: Green Diesel Engineering.

I edited the last sentence to read as follows: "The ECU on the 2.8L CRD is made by Bosch, and at this time there are at least two companies offering a re-flash for the CRD ECU: one is Green Diesel Engineering and the other is INMOTION TUNING."

However, when I attempted to save this edited sentence, it was flagged by the automatic program as being Unconstructive.

Note: Regrettably, due to problems with the login program, I was unable to login with my Wikipedia username, Biscuiteater57, nor was I able to register separately under my Wikipedia username (which I prefer to do). I received error messages that the username already exists in the unified user login, but also that the username does not exist. I have submitted a trouble ticket about this problem.

Looks like you have made your edits now. You had added Italic text in your edit, which is what you get when you click the italic link in the toolbar but don't actually apply it to text. Many times people will test the software and just click buttons, so that's what triggered it. – Adrignola discuss 12:06, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Chess Opening Theory/1. c4/1...e5/2. Nc3/2...Nf6 (filter log)
Description
I was editing the page > the content under the title "McComiskey"

(McComiskey, Bruce. "Disassembling Plato's Critique of Rhetoric in the Gorgias (447a-466a)." Rhetoric Review 11 (1992): 79-90. McComiskey concurs that Plato scholars do not contest Plato’s disdain for the sophists. However, Plato’s treatment of sophist rhetoric, particularly that of Gorgias, the Leontini rhetorician, divides scholars: some—Kathleen Freeman, Terence Irwin, and W.H. Thompson among others—read Plato’s treatment of Gorgias the sophist as fair and accurate; conversely, McComiskey, drawing his argument from extant fragments of Gorgias, sees these views as distorted and unfounded. Plato presents this distorted view of Gorgias’ rhetoric to gain the favor of an audience leery of anti-democratic sentiments. Plato’s audience would have memories of the tyranny of the Four Hundred and of the tyranny of the Thirty freshly in mind. These bloody revolts temporary supplanted Greek democracy with a Socrates-Plato endorsed oligarchy. Gorgias the sophist supported democracy; thus, Plato’s readers were unlikely to accept Socrates’ “defeat” of Gorgias if Plato did not depict Gorgias’ rhetoric in a conflicting and absurd light. McComiskey explains that unlike Socrates and Plato whose epistemology is foundational, based on some “external reality or immutable truth” against which to compare, to weigh impressions, Gorgias the sophist adheres to a relativistic epistemology based on the kairotic , the opportune, moment. Since human’s understanding of reality is filtered through the distortion of our senses, a kairotic moment is necessary to “unite disparate subjective” images (205). McComiskey concludes that Plato’s rendering of Gorgias’ rhetoric could never be supported by Gorgias’ the sophist’s relativistic epistemology.)

Ha, the "Specific-page vandalism" bit on the log is the "identity" of the filter Special:AbuseFilter. --Panic (discusscontribs) 01:48, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think it was the URL spam (copy paste of a section of links I had on another page) the filter will not detect commutative edits (of the same content), I've completed the action and I doubt that a change in the filter would be required or result in improvement (even so a reviewer should be considered trustworthy enough to be excluded from this type of spam detection, or at least susceptible to engage in constructive dialog if any deviation is detected, and it would be ground to have the reviewer status removed). --Panic (discusscontribs) 00:13, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Don't panic. Pun intended. Was a syntax error in a filter that Darklama has helpfully corrected. – Adrignola discuss 00:52, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, not it worked, after I tried again after a while. Strange error.
It does appear strange. Seems to be some kind of prevention for new or unregistered users adding large amounts of text in one go which might suggest a copy and paste of copyrighted text. Hopefully someone who knows the Filters better can help.--ЗAНИA talk 21:35, 20 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I believe, after looking a little more, that this filter prevents unregistered users from creating lots of new pages within a short space of time. I have lowered the time that this filter kicks in. The filter will now allow unregistered users to create 2 new pages every 10 minutes. If this is an inconvenience then maybe it could be lowered further otherwise I would suggest logging in or registering an account.--ЗAНИA talk 21:46, 20 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not great with the edit filter but I may have a look to see what the problem is. I suspect that it doesn't allow very new users to create a user page with external links until they've made a few edits. Anyway, for now, I have copied the above text onto your user page so hopefully you can now edit it to your heart's content.--ЗAНИA talk 19:15, 9 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
A quick look tells me that you triggered the filter because you created a new account and quickly created a new page with an external link. If you had waited a while (say, 20 minutes) or made edits elsewhere first then it would have allowed it. This filter is necessary at the moment because daily we receive a substantial amount of spam from spambots which make similar edits. I'm sorry you were inconvenienced - hopefully everything will be fine for you from now on.--ЗAНИA talk 19:19, 9 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Trying to create this page:

Maintaining Sort Order

[edit source]

Python does not provide modules like C++'s set and map data types as part of its standard library. This is a concious decision on the part of Guido, et al to preserve "one obvious way to do it." Instead Python delegates this task to third-party libraries that are available on the Python Package Index. These libraries use various techniques to maintain list, dict, and set types in sorted order. Maintaining order using a specialized data structure can avoid very slow behavior (quadratic run-time) in the naive approach of editing and constantly re-sorting. Several implementations are described here.

 • Python SortedContainers Module - Pure-Python implementation that is fast-as-C implementations. Implements sorted list, dict, and set data types. Testing includes 100% code coverage and hours of stress. Documentation includes full API reference, performance comparison, and contributing/development guidelines.
 • Python rbtree Module - Provides a fast, C-implementation for dict and set data types. Based on a red-black tree implementation.
 • Python treap Module - Provides a sorted dict data type. Uses a treap for implementation and improves performance using Cython.
 • Python bintrees Module - Provides several tree-based implementations for dict and set data types. Fastest implementations are based on AVL and Red-Black trees. Implemented in C. Extends the conventional API to provide set operations for dict data types.
 • Python banyan Module - Provides a fast, C-implementation for dict and set data types.
 • Python skiplistcollections Module - Pure-Python implementation based on skip-lists providing a limited API for dict and set data types.
 • Python blist Module - Provides sorted list, dict and set data types based on the "blist" data type, a B-tree implementation. Implemented in Python and C.

Oh sure after about an hour's worth of effort on my part I'm going to waste more of my valuable time waiting for editors to interrogate me. Only people with an unrealistic concept of reality would expect me to put up with this. My Wikipedia name is Abitslow, fyi. If I am not mistaken, this is the second time I've attempted to improve content and been prevented to on wikibooks (other was a different topic). It is especially galling when the content I posted was on the DISCUSSION page, not the article page! Hopefully, I will remember your restrictive software and never contribute to WB again. Just a really bad experience.

Trying to add a link(1) from the "IT" acronym wiki page to clarify certification terminology to the A+ certification wiki page, and error led me here. (1)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_technology -- tried to add this link to A+ paragraph(related wiki page) to define the rem "IT"-- a colleague in the APA recently asked what the term "IT" meant. Added an extended resource for professionals who are nominally engaged with regard to "IT" community technical terminology. As a highly educated professional editor, I felt this liaison would enhance and expedite the exchange of accurate and timely information.

You can add the link, you just need to format it properly as a Wikilink (information technology) and not as a URL. However, I must say if someone doesn't know what "IT" means it is rather unlikely they'd be reading a book on A+ Certification. QuiteUnusual (discusscontribs) 16:08, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have encountered a problem recently. I have tried to submit an article that is part of my university project. The wikibooks would not let me submit as it seems to have detected an email in my article. However this seems to be a mistake since I have not included an email. Would you be able to help me fix it? Thank you.

Remove the external URLs you are trying to insert because these are triggering the spam filter. It would be better to actually edit the page in the book with the content rather than your user page as this will not trigger the filter. Follow the instructions given when you try to save the page. Do NOT enter "https://en.wikipedia..." in order to link to Wikipedia. Instead use name to display.
